So this is in one of the kids toilets at my son's school

I am, for my sins, on the pta committee and can get stuff like this sorted out. My view is it doesn't have long left and needs addressing urgently.

Am I right ?

Get the janitor to sand it back, paint some rust proof paint on it and a coat of white and it will be good for another few years.
Zip tie a bit of foam pipe insuation round the pipe for extra protection and you will be fine for longer than your kid is at the school.

Trust that’s rust and not some sort of dirty protest?
If it’s rust, looks like it’s been like that for years, and will still be the same when your kid leaves, so I wouldn’t worry about it.

And get the kids to aim better! I’m sure its not terminal as normally rust like that is coming from the inside , that rust is coming from kids pissing on it .

Imo, I deem this low priority which is covered under normal maintenance work. Just be careful what your PTA offer to pay (what does your Constitution say?) as it could end up biting you in the future.

(PTA Treasurer myself, and our Constitution clearly state our objective i.e. provision of facilities to support learning and education. I would be happy to approve new play kitchen and waterproof suits for EYFS, new iPads etc.., but I don't feel replacement radiator or any general maintenance work would fall under the PTA remit).

That just wants painting. It does want more regular attention though, I suspect it's been like that some time. When painting it they need to make an attempt to wire brush up the backs as well as the rust will have crept. When it does let go rads aren't particularly expensive and even if it lets go and does weep, it's in a bathroom with a trough drain next to it. It's about as low risk as possible from a building damage point of view. The chances of a child getting scalded are so vanishingly small it's not worth too much worry.

Taste test?

Rust converter plus some white paint. £8,000 plus vat if you have a PFI scheme, £12.99 from Toolstation if not.

I won't be offering to pay for it but I do have a direct line to the headteacher and she generally listens about stuff like this, so I could get it replaced fairly easily/quickly.

Seems like the consensus isn't to bother however!

As soon as I saw it I knew it would be a toilet!

It looks like surface rust so as others have said it needs treating and painting. It will last a good few years next.

Exactly what I was thinking. Looks like surface rust from what you can see. Worst bit probably where the pipe meets the floor.
