Currently looking to move house & found a property where next door neighbours have two Mitsubishi AC units on the side of their house. They're at a height where I'd see them in the garden and they're mounted higher than the fence with no trees or bushes higher than the fence.

The current occupiers weren't there last summer so couldn't tell me if I will hear these units running in my garden or if the windows are open.

Any thoughts?

It looked similar to this and there were two of them side-by-side so not sure of the model number.

Yes, with your windows open you will hear A/C condensers running. By definition, in hot weather your windows will be open and the condensers will be running...

I have one on my balcony and it's pretty much inaudible above the general noise of the road. When there's no traffic and it's in cooling mode it's whisper quiet, and when in full heating mode and powering all three units it's probably about the noise of a fridge or a desk fan. Still inaudible when I close the balcony door.

I think unless the units are old/knackered you're very unlikely to have an issue with them.

Think we posted at almost the same time, but as per my other message, this is very much not my experience. Even standing next to it outside it's hard to make it out, and inside even though there's just a pane of glass separating it from my living room it is always inaudible.

Thanks for that. Hadn't considered they would run in heating mode!

Would you say they are quiet even when you're stood the side where the fan is? And does the fan ever spin at a high speed - I guess that's what would generate the noise

Yes mine is fairly quiet even stood directly outside on the balcony next to it. I'd have no qualms about moving near one if it was the same sort that I have.

Anecdotally I've found heating mode to be more audible than cooling, but if you happen to be able to tell if the house has a gas boiler then it's entirely feasible they're only used for cooling. Again, even on the maximum heating mode I still can't hear it when I close the door and the unit is literally a foot away from my window, I can see the back of it from the sofa where I'm writing this smile

You don't need to worry about heating mode, your windows will be closed. It's those hot, sticky August nights that matter. Bear in mind that the hotter the night the more vigorously the fans will be running. Sure, if you live on a main road you might not notice over the traffic noise, but if you live somewhere quiet you will notice.

The answer, of course, is to install your own A/C system.

It will depend how old they are and I guess how they change as they age and when the fans get dirty. Stayed in a air b&b cottage with a rusty old ac on the property next door. Just over a car width apart and that made an annoying whirr all night long (probably all day too but we were out) after a day or 2 it was almost relaxing to go to sleep to.

How close to the property boundary are they. With heat pumps becoming more common they are going to be often part of the garden scenery.

I have Mitsubishi heavy industries units and they’re fine. There’s another Mitsubishi brand and I suspect they’re fine too

They tend to be very quiet and a bedroom at night is a very low load so won’t be working very hard even on a hot night. Something like a loose cover rattling away is going to be more problematic than a unit in good order.

It’s hard to give a suitable comparison but if you have an extract fan in a nearby bathroom, that’s possibly just as loud.

Buy a bigger louder unit is the only answer surely?

No noticeable noise is my view, cars driving by would be louder and the birds chirping at 5am much louder.
