These boards are crumbling around my house roof. I would say they are from around the mid 1980s. Is it likely they contain asbestos or will they simply be cement? Many thanks.

There is a very high probability, most likely chrysotile. It's an asbestos cement verge undercloak

Best to get it tested if you want to remove it.

If you look at the bottom edge, just over half way up, it appears that there's a bit held on by a fibre.

Confirmed. No real-world hazard at all unless and until you start messing about with it. Essentially the cement keeps the asbestos stable but if you start smashing up the sheets then fibres are likely to get into the air. Lungs do not like asbestos fibres - which is the hazard.

Thanks all.

I’m having a new roof this year. What should I do with this stuff? Take it up a council waste depot ?

Talk to your council first, It has to be double bagged and is best removed by a specialist waste contractor.

Thanks. I’ve just ordered some bags from my council who then dispose of it free. Not sure how much I can get in the bags though and only allowed more bags once per six months.
