Destiny 2 - New Players
Discussion
Hi All,
I first played Destiny 2 when it first released and I ended up jumping ship eventually to Apex Legends. I remember the last raid I played was the one where you were pulled towards a ledge and you entered a shadow realm shooting flying skulls.
I've just seen recently that the Light and Darkness collection is on sale on Xbox for £18 and basically includes everything except the next expansion coming out in July.
How easy is it for a retuning player to catch-up and learn all the new systems? Or is it too far gone for a new player to become competitive.

I haven't played in a while but the key questions for me are do you want to play PvP, PvE or both and secondly do you plan to play solo or with a regular group?
Fundamentally the way the power system worked meant that everyone was reset to the same base power level on a regular basis, so with a bit if time you could get up to the required power level fairly easily. They used to sell bundles to shortcut the process but I wouldn't bother, assuming they still do.
The reasons for my first questions though are that...
...PvP is tough in Destiny IMO and whilst they increased the SBMM a bit to give you more of a chance, you might come up against people with all the sunset weapons, a full range of abilities and they know how to use them and combine that will strong gun skill which can make them very, very hard to stop in my experience. I'm decent at online shooters but I'd say Destiny is the one where I've felt the biggest skill gap between me and the best.
PvE is much easier as that god-tier PvP player might just be in your squad so they can backpack you through a mission with you barely needing to fire a shot!
In terms of levelling up, i think it's much easier if you have a squad as you can do all the high ranked events that offer the best pinnacle gear. Ultimately that is why I stopped playing. As an average solo player, it would take me a whole season to get a full set of top rated gear, then the power level would change and all that grinding is wiped out.
Still a brilliant game and if i suddenly had a regular squad I'd be back on it like a shot...
P.S. Others may have more recent experience...

Power grinding in Destiny is basically a thing of the past now, if a high-level player is in your team, everyone's power is scaled to them. You effectively benefit from the hours they put in by having your power raised based on their power level number.
There's a big shift coming in Edge of Fate, new gear system where weapons and armour will have tiers, there's set bonuses ala Diablo etc. A lot of the old gear people have been sitting on for a while will be devalued significantly, which is a good thing as frankly there's been little reason for hardcore players to play much as there has been nothing worth grinding for, with our vaults being stuffed with loot which was a degree better than anything you could find in the game.
My advice for Destiny is to play it and enjoy it, but don't treat it like a job and don't try to make it the only game you play. As a new player, if you want to work your way through all the dungeons, raids, grandmaster nightfalls etc, there's loads of content and it will take a long time to play through it all, especially if you want to get good / be useful in that content instead of getting carried through by a team of veterans. Everyone should aspire to learn the content and be good really, if you get carried it's like being on safari, you get an open-top bus ride through the content without needing to engage with it. If you try to really learn it and get good at it, you'll see where the real magic is.
One day however, you'll have played through everything and at one time or other, been very proficient at the different content blocks (you'll get rusty on stuff that you haven't played in a while but it comes back quickly) and you'll run out of new content. When that happens, play something else and come back to Destiny when new content drops. Don't do as many do and log in every day, moan about how there's nothing to do and log out, perpetuating a state of misery about the game. Destiny can be great but it's not a full-time hobby, not once you've cracked all the endgame stuff anyway.

The game is still one of the best looter shooters out there
But be warned, there is no story mode to speak of, so if you start now those stores might make no sense.
The game has also been very streamlined towards streamers and good players, difficulty is off the scale, so unless you are very good you will spend most of the game dying in the newer content
Clans are not what they were, they tend to be huge or just a tiny group of sweats who just want people to make up the numbers to raid.
PVP for me has always been garbage, completely and utterly aimed at no life players, especially Trials and on PC cheating is an issue
But, the game still plays well, you can still do a lot for free and for little money.
Be warned dungeons are now paid for, a disgraceful decision last year that alienated a lot of players. and the DLC and glittery crap stuff is still very much a thing.
But, it's a new season soon, so try it and see.

The game is very easy for the most part, to the point where they're adding customisable difficulty in with Edge of Fate.
Paid dungeons are a thing of the past now, too. Future dungeons will not need a dungeon key and there's been an event on for the last 8 weeks or so where you can play 3 of the legacy dungeons for free with updated loot and some minor mechanics updates.
