Engine rebuild turnaround times?

Because of the nice weather, I foolishly decided to take the Tuscan into work again today and it's now running even worse than before Not only is it now stuttering and misfiring all the time, there's a loud clicking noise coming from under the bonnet when it does so

I just have this horrible feeling that I'm looking at an engine rebuild What's the average turnaround time for a rebuild these days if this is the case?

Sounds nasty.

Although I reckon it could still be something very simple (probably electrical), HT lead related.

Having said that, I admit I know very little about engines etc...

Please let us know what it is when TMS have a look at it.

Sounds to me like a Lambda sensor problem and a reshim. I think that you really KNOW when your engine needs a rebuild!!! (fingers crossed)

Even though it's not booked into TMS until next Wednesday, I'll probably drop it in there on Friday or Saturday just to make sure I don't get tempted to take it out for a spin! Anyhow - I have a whole heap of work I need to do over Easter so it's probably best that I won't be able to "waste it" on such frivolities as enjoying a bit of topless motoring...

Just booked in my 2000 Tuscan Red Rose for a top end rebuild due to massive oil consumption (valve guide seals apparently) and loud rattling (probably cam followers). Also for missing 5th gear.

It's gone to TVR Power in Coventry instead of Blackpool because they're supposed to be quicker but I've still been told 4-8 weeks. What with today's weather I'm well and truly gutted

On another note, when I came to drive home today the car was running much better when cold. As it got warmer it got rougher and rougher until it sounded like my MG when the cylider head split! Well, maybe not that bad, but it was a rougher than a rough day in Roughsville all told.

Mine was 8weeks first time, 5 weeks second and it,s been away 3 weeks (Blackpool) this time!!??

I was told that if they sent it to Blackpool then I could be looking at 12 weeks!!

Question: How can it possibly take so long to carry out a top-end engine rebuild? Some time ago I had similar work done (including the head being sent away for a skim) on a 6-cyl 24valve BMW and it only took 1 week.

Even making generous allowances this should only take 2 weeks tops, they must be well practised by now.

I was prepared for some unreliability but not the huge turnaround time for repairs.

Mine took seven weeks but it had to go back twice because the delivery drivers dropped the engine and cracked the sump. So I suppose if one was being fair to TVR the average time should be about four weeks. Hope you have better luck with the delivery drivers!

Just have to wait and see what the verdict is when I take the car into TMS. If it is a rebuild I will be expecting a replacement Tuscan for the duration...

Bad luck mate, that car has really been unlucky for you Hope it's nothing to drastic and your not without for too long
Mines been away a week now having money liberally pored in to the engine bay, Joolz sounds really sorry everytime he rings up after finding another 'little' problem

Had the engine on my last Griffith 500 rebuilt twice at TVR Power in Coventry. Both times took 1 week only.

Just got back from dropping the car off at TMS and the initial quick diagnosis is duff HT leads. Will post again once one of the engineers has had a look, but if that's the case then huge relief all around

My dealer (Newtown Motors) recommended removal of engine other wise the car could sit in the garage at Blackpool for wqeeks before the engine was removed.
So engine was sent and turnaround from Blackpool was 6 days. Spoke to a good chap in the Engine dept. (who is not allowed to talk to customers) said that they were getting their act together and the follower issues were petering out, and there were relatively few returns these days so turnaround was good.
I unfortunately had to wait 2 weeks for the dealer to re insert the engine as their TVR man was on hols but the factory response was excellent.

Just had a call from TMS to say the Tuscan is ready for collection! Looks to have been faulty HT leads all along!

Aha, I was right then! I must be a technical guru.
Glad it's sorted then. Although at the same time I've been waiting 8 weeks now for a new set of HT leads from TMS for mine!

Let us know if it's fully sorted it.
