Man, 39, dies in sports car crash
Last posted: Monday 18 October 2004 15:19

A BOLTON businessman was killed and his wife was seriously injured when their sports car smashed into a garden wall in Dunscar.

Christopher Warburton, aged 39, and his wife Julie were on their way to their home Dunscar Fold, Dunscar, in the early hours of Sunday morning, after attending the Bolton Wanderers chairman's ball at the Reebok Stadium.

Their purple TVR Tuscan Speed Six car hit a wall in Darwen Road, not far from their home.

Neighbours heard a loud screech as the car crashed into the stone garden wall, just yards away from Dunscar war memorial. The impact of the crash demolished the wall. Firefighters cut Mr Warburton, who runs the Farnworth based Proplas Ltd, out of the wreckage. He was rushed to the Royal Bolton Hospital suffering from head and internal injuries.

The father of two was pronounced dead on arrival.

His 38-year-old wife was also taken to hospital suffering from a fractured hip and other injuries.

Mr Warburton was a keen Wanderers supporter and a corporate sponsor of the club.

Today a club spokesman said: "The club would like to extend its deepest sympathies to the family."

Station Officer Dave Pimblett, from Bolton Central Fire Station, said: "With the severity of the injuries we had to cut the man out of the car as quickly as possible. It took us half an hour to get him out and the paramedics then took over."

One neighbour said: "We heard the car screeching as though it was trying to stop then it was just silent. There were lots of police and fire engines around the scene."

Darwen Road was sealed off for two hours while police carried out an investigation at the crash scene to determine the cause of the accident. The road was reopened yesterday morning after the wreckage was removed by police investigators.

The Tuscan Speed Six sports car is a rare car made by a specialist vehicle maker in Blackpool. Police have launched an appeal for witnesses who either saw the accident happen or a TVR Tuscan Speed Six car driving through the Bromley Cross area.

A police spokesman, said: "The TVR Tuscan sports car is quite a distinctive car and I'm sure is quite rare for Bolton. If anyone saw that particular kind of car they should contact us immediately."
