It looks as though the arguments about signalling or not are now being trumped by cars fitted with "lane assist". If you don't signal to change lane, the car will try to push you back into lane. It's a very unpleasant feeling the first time it happens to you, particularly if you weren't aware that the car is so fitted. It happened to me recently with a rental car picked up late at an airport. Wibbly wobbly, I actually wondered if it had a flat tyre ....

It's no good saying RTFM when you have just jumped into a rental car at 10:00 pm and have an hours drive ahead of you. You just want something straightforward that starts, stops and goes round bends. And don't get me started on unexpected stop/start.
