Have always liked Gin and Tonic and the last few years have meant its more available and you feel less like you need to wear a cravat when ordering or drinking one, I remember sharing a couple of G and T's in the past with some very posh folk and thinking it was awesome but they were driving an S Type Jag and did actually wear a Cravat, I thought it was a myth but they exist, or did, he died recently and I felt bad as that breed were dying out.

So, we have perhaps reached peak Gin, many different flavours, loads of "Artisan" Tonics and gin filled Baubles for the Christmas tree, it wont die off back to the odd older gent or lady ordering one and looking like a relic from the seventies but its had its day.

Prossecco appeared and that has perhaps died back a little, as much as anything, cheap, fizzy that gets you battered ever will, thats the fantastic, universal thing about booze, it all does the same thing, but critically it needs to be fashionable. Vodka had its moment and died back, loads of flavours, posh ones like Grey Goose.

So, what will be the next thing to appear as a new drink, or re-appear as the latest thing ?

Martini ?
Cinzano ?
Campari ?
Watneys Red Barrell ?
Blended Whiskies ?
Emva Cream ?
Double Diamond ?
Taboo ?
Mirage ?
Midori ?
Advocaat ?
Quatro ? not booze but it was ace


Basically, whats cheesy and really unfashionable now ?

Vodka has died back? Seriously?
Maybe when I’ve died, until then I’ll be chugging Absolut, Stolychnya, Smirnoff, Grey Goose, and a British brand Chase, well maybe Chase, I got a bottle for my birthday, but it’s still in the freezer, untried as yet.
I was mildly surprised to see Midori in your list of possible next big things.
I’ve never seen that as a drink on its own, my wife has a bottle for making Melonballs, a cocktail that she got into in New York, years ago.
The ingredients are Vodka, Midori, Orange Juice, and balls of melon fruit, for which she uses a melon baller, a spoonlike tool for getting a ball of melon flesh.
It’s a very smooth and enjoyable drink, but you have to use your head when pouring the vodka, or you’d be on your back after 3 or more.
Yeah, it has, there were Vodka bars all over the place, with vast selections of different vodkas and loads of flavours, that seems to have subsided and everyone is drinking Gin instead, things go in cycles, of course there will still be a lot of Vodka drunk, but all those folk now drinking Gin have defected from something else.

At the end of the day it is a distilled spirit, one is largely odourless and the other is flavoured with Juniper berries, it gets even more confusing when you start flavouring either, at that point they arent very distinct, the flavour of an Orange Gin vs an Orange Vodka for example will be more based on whatever is used to give it an orange flavour.

At the end of the day, its booze, make it into something palatable, get a bit drunk, most of the rest is marketing and image.

This is what happens when you’ve had too many birthdays, things you knew and loved fade into the background, and whippersnapper hipsters move in and take over.
I go to Baltic Restaurant, Blackfriars Road, by Southwark tube station, at least once per month for dinner.
As the name suggests, they serve East European fare, Polish food, Russian, Latvian etc.
Last time I looked, they served 60 varieties of vodka, I like their Polish Red, a hint of rye.
When in Northern France, check out Le Kremlin, a bar-restaurant in Vieux-Lille, the part of Lille that has been restored to its former glory of red brick buildings, you’ll find 40 different vodkas there, or there were last time I was over.
To be honest, not an expert on Vodka, tried quite a few neat and they all taste broadly the same to me, some are smoother and more pleasant (Less revolting) but always just seems like flavourless alcohol that goes in things that have a flavour to turn them into an alcoholic drink to me by and large.

Maybe I need to try some others, but part of me just thinks, sod it, stick it in with a mixer or have something else.


Southern Comfort was mentioned, used to drink that a lot when younger and tend to get a bottle at Christmas, my son got me one for my birthday so will give that another try.
