Prostate cancer
Discussion
Hi guys voiced this before when pissed but could we have a dedicated room on this disease? Its number one killer cancer for guys over 50 and not enough research is going in to it. I'm currently awaiting surgery for prostate removal and scared stless. I don't even have any symptoms at the moment.

Finally saw my GP last month. He took blood and urine samples and put me on Xatral to relax my prostate which seems to have helped. Went back on Wednesday for test results and everything looks okay, PSA normal apparently. Hopefully nothing more than an enlarged prostate due to aging. Not keen on being on Xatral for the rest of my days though.
sadly not the same for a lot of guys I instigated this thread. Dont like talking about it, 3 months post radical prostectomy here. No nerve sparing but first blood test showing undetectable psa. Worried the surgeon said I had a positive margin, so waiting for another blood test to see if im clear. Sounds stupid but I can Tell guys you can still have an orgasm with a flacid penis loldon'tbesilly said:
Looking for some advice/guidance if at all possible as sadly the treatment (hormone therapy/radiotherapy) I received back in 2012 has failed & the cancer is back with traces in both my prostate & seminal vesicle (one).
I've had a bone scan/MRI & PET scan and luckily there is no sign that the cancer has spread outside of the prostate.
The Urologist has now booked me in for a template biopsy which will ascertain the grade of cancer which will lead to a treatment plan, however, he has stated that a radical prostatectomy is the best way forward regardless of the results from the biopsy.
I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has had any of the above treatments, especially anyone who has had a prostatectomy following previous treatment (radiotherapy) that failed.
The Urologist has suggested that the implications/consequences following the OP for a patient are potentially worse than those who had the OP without having had radiotherapy.
I have yet to see an Oncologist (unfortunately) and I'm hoping a different view/opinion will be forthcoming from that received from the Urologist
Thanks in advance
I'm surprised you were offered a prostatectomy after hormone and radiotherapy. It was made clear to me by my local NHS trust that after radiotherapy a prostatectomy was not possible. No prob having a prostatectomy in and out in 3 days. Felt a bit uncomfortable for 2 weeks afterwards walking around with a pee bag strapped to my calf though I've had a bone scan/MRI & PET scan and luckily there is no sign that the cancer has spread outside of the prostate.

It's very easy to get a private PSA blood test. I used this lab a year ago. It's all done through the post, they send you a kit to extract blood from a finger. When returned they send you a Laboratory report and a Doctor's review of the result. It costs £47.20

This morning is the day after surgery, went to theatre at 11.30am, on recovery ward for 6.30pm and on the ward by 8pm. I had an uncomfortable but not too painful night and not much sleep, to be honest I was worried about catching the catheter even though I’d been assured it’s firmly in place.
I did vomit a couple of times due to the anaesthetic and I was unable to eat anything. I’m here until Friday when transport back to has been arranged for.

I'm not sure if it's the norm but they had me self injecting blood thinners into my stomach for 3 weeks after the op to prevent blood clots. A nurse taught me how to do it on the ward.I did vomit a couple of times due to the anaesthetic and I was unable to eat anything. I’m here until Friday when transport back to has been arranged for.

Guys, just a bit of advice which my surgery has omitted to tell me prior to my blood tests, sex or exercise 24 hours prior to having a blood test can mess up the PSA readings, I had a void test last year and they weren’t able to retest for 3 months (for some reason!), when they retested I required surgery, which fortunately was successful, but if I’d been unlucky those 3 months could have made a difference to the outcome.
I feel that's totally unacceptable, any abnormal PSA reading should mean a pretty quick referral to the hospital Gassing Station | Health Matters | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
