To explain the requirements of the TfL Direct Vision Standard.

HGVs used in London must allow the driver directly to see the head and shoulders of such a person, at a distance of 4.5 metres from the passenger side of a cab*, or be required to fit a panoply of risk mitigating equipment**. Upcoming standards seek to reduce this to 2.5m or less.

But no mention is made, in the 'guidance' provided, of the height of the driver, the position he/she chooses for the seat, or indeed what counts as a "small European female".

All in aid of the Mayor's 'vision' to eliminate death and serious injury from London's streets by 2041.

A noble goal, I think we can all agree, if not a practical one.

* So, two lanes away or across the pavement and well into Boots.

** Including proximity sensors and cameras
