I've just drained the gearbox oil from the Vixen - Ford 2000e (bullet) gearbox which I believe is not the standard one. Reading up on what to refill with, it seems it should be SAE80 gear oil. Then I started reading further about modern oils containing additives which damage brass, so don't use them. Some people are recommending ATF. Anyone able to offer some knowledge about what oil is best for older gearboxes - bearing in mind the car is being sprinted and hill climbed so does get some abuse.

GL4 is a recommended option by some as being friendlier for brass. Some are mineral & some synthetic (or semi). I'm thinking mineral is probably the safe option ???

The 'bullet' is strictly speaking the 2000e gearbox but fitted with a set of close ratio cogs. .

Andy / Oli, it was a previous owner who told me he had put a 2000e box in during the 80's when the engine was modified. He told me it was a stronger box than the standard one he took out. I've read that the 2000e box was used in sportier fords such as the Mexico instead of (I think) what they call a type 3. I'm guessing that may have been the original. The box I have has reverse at bottom right.
