E36: 325i or 328i?

My brother is looking to get into a cheap E36, and while the nominal bhp is the same (192) on the 325 and 328, the torque is significantly more on the 328 (245 v 280 nm).
Now, if price was not an issue, I suppose the 328i would be the better bet, but in terms of mechanical reliability, any caveats? Both have a timing chain I suppose? And both are single Vanos, or is it only the 328 that has Vanos? Finally, my brother insists on getting it in automatic guise, any problems to look out for there?
