Below is a video from Durham Constabulary… it’s a hard watch, it’s a sobering and upsetting watch

But I think it’s something that everyone should see, it’s shows what Roads Policing Officers ( and ambo/fire ) actually deal with and the reality of the job and why they do it

It’s about a road accident, it features the Police who attended, people caught up in it, witnesses and family members and an offender being identified and how they were investigated and charged

Saw a piece on this on the breakfast telly this morning.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p0cngpr3/the...

Went on to do an interview, which i expect his lawyer convinced him to do, in the hope of an early release i suspect, although IMO, the should have been jailed for much longer, or fked off back to Romania.

Absolutely unforgivable, ever.

Watched this on iPlayer earlier, took a while for me to realise there was a car under the truck.

When you see the footage from the dash cam in the truck and the red Puma and the white car gets hit from behind I wondered how there were 3 fatalities.

Horrible. Hope it was quick for the people who died. Horrific thing to be on scene witnessing it.

He should've had life for that, to be surfing your phone whilst driving all day, you know your going to kill someone sooner or later

God that was a tough watch.

I remember this crash from last year, and social media posts on it. I seem to remember a relative of the couple with the dog posting which at the time brought home the reality of the horror.

As for the driver, he didn’t set out to kill, but his actions prove how carelessness and stupidly can transform an ordinary bloke doing an ordinary job into a triple killer whose actions go way beyond those who died. There are those who were injured, family and friends of those involved, Emergrncy workers, hospital medics, highways staff, recovery drivers.

The truck driver’s actions will have touched the lives of hundreds of people.

It is hard to watch and hopefully all involved will not be to traumatised and will be given help.
It is true those who have not been involved, or seen something traumatic will not realise the lasting effects of something like this , It is HORRIBLE , (been there done that and it does affect you .)
I think causing DEATH by dangerous or careless driving should be 15 years minimum and banned for LIFE .
Was reading about a Paramedic who drank 10m pints and drove into a man on a bicycle killing him and got something like 5 years and banned for 7 , This in my opinion is nowhere near enough as in this case he should have got more .
The law needs to be toughened up and the standard of driving overall needs to be improved massively.
Driving through 2 villages today 20 mph we were passed by two vans and 1 car and they just seemed to vanish as if they couldn't have waited two minutes (enough rambling that is for another thread )

I just read that the truck driver was browsing adult dating/sex sites when he caused the accident. I'm even more convinced he should've had a life sentence

Caused utter carnage that trucker the scene looks like a war film. 3 dead for pissing about on your phone, why do people do it.
I’m surprised he wasn’t injured himself the way that truck cab came off and was barrel rolling.
That couple and the pick-up man didn’t stand a chance with a fully loaded truck at full speed ploughing into them at standstill, lucky the others in the red and white cars got away lightly.
Must have been a tough job for all the services involved.

The other thing it highlighted for me (as a reminder, tbh) is yet again how damn good Durham Police are. They have some sympathy for the offender, far more for the victims and their families, and worked with all of them as well as the BBC to get about as good an outcome from this tragic event as you can get.

As others have said, a tough watch that, really brings home how fragile life is.

What an awful experience for all those involved.
You have one hell of a responsibility as a driver and even more so as a driver of a hgv. Yet I still see them looking down at their phones etc
I hope some who see this will change their ways.

This tragedy was caused by more than just a momentary lapse or an unforeseen event occurring. The HGV driver made a conscious decision to be continually distracted by his phone at the time, and he was an accident waiting to happen, which it did with deadly consequences. The prison sentence should reflect the severity of the driver’s dangerous actions, but I don’t know whether the sentence given is adequate.

It is also a tragedy that the victims who died did not use simple mitigation measures, to help prevent themselves from being caught up in the collision, which otherwise might have seen them still alive today*.

It should serve as a salutary lesson to all drivers, but I haven’t seen this being discussed yet or even mentioned in the media, which is a shame. Despite how tragic this incident is, it would be a good driver education tool, to help others avoid becoming victims in similar circumstances in the future.

Perhaps this should be a separate topic in the advanced driving forum.

*awaits the inevitable knee-jerk flaming from the unthinking ones, accusing me of victim blaming.

OK please tell us all what these simple mitigation measures are.

What was interesting is that he still had hold of his mobile phone, when in most circumstances, even if it was in a holder, would have got flung about and more than likely burnt or smashed up.

Yes I thought that was a bit strange that he had his phone in his pocket but stated that he was gripping the wheel with both hands at the time of the accident. Unless of course, it wasn't the phone he was browsing but instead an iPad that was hot spotting off the phone.

Probably new what he had been doing and kept it on him hoping they wouldn’t ask/ find it before he could get rid or delete stuff off it.
The level of his usage should have led to a greater sentence imo, it wasn’t an incoming call or something that distracting him for a second he was searching on it all day long it seems, ridiculous. I drive hgv’s myself and there’s no way I’d be acting like that.

Amazed how well the driver in the cab was protected, given the how many times it rolled and tumbled. Not a scratch!

I'd be intrigued to know what the simple mitigation measures are you can take when slowing down for a queue of stationary traffic then being driven into by a juggernaut?
