Anyone now this 968 in Amaranth?
Discussion
Long shot I know, but even the dealer doesn't seem to know much about it and what he does know he doesn't seem to want to let on....

Amaranth Violet suits the 968 really well. After speaking with the vendor and the impression the photo’s gave, I drove nearly 3 hours each way to view this car. It’s the epitome of a 10ft car I.e. from 10ft back you’re going to buy it, 5 minutes spent closer and it’s not so impressive, after 15 minutes I was thinking about the long journey home.
Very few 968’s haven’t had any paintwork done at some time but a lumpy filled rear wing, various shades of paint and sill covers bonded on with Sikaflex isn’t what I expected from the description over the phone. They were kind enough to put it on a car lift for me and the underneath was also below par, the rear torsion bar tube was heavily rusted as were most of the brake lines and other underbody attachments. Whilst the previous owner had paid out a fair bit on Porsche and specialist servicing all those little jobs an enthusiast does that make a fair car a good one, had not been done for a long time. For a 17 year old car its ok but for a 17 year old 968 not so good, just my impression of course but for anyone viewing the car I suggest you look past the shine and I think you will see what I mean.
I have since bought a 968 Sport from a dealer in Chertsy (30 miles from home) and coincidently its been looked after for many years by a specialist only a mile from me . It’s a spanking car with fewer miles for roughly the same money, well a bit less actually.
Good luck with the search.

Thanks Chad Speed,
I've been trying to get some info via email/phone for the last 3 or 4 days but the vendor just doesn't seem to want to answer some of my questions. I had actually asked him if I could do the 140 mile round trip to view it tomorrow and fortunately he didn't confirm that that was OK. You've saved me half a day off work and half a tank... Thanks! Shame it wasn't better though, as you say, great colour.
BTW, the car you bought form Chertsey, was it Roly's red sport?? If so, I'm jealous. Went to see it twice but the OH vetoed the colour....

Hi stuarte
Yes it was indeed the 968 Sport from Roly at eporsch. The colour wasn't high on our wish list but the condition of the car and its history made it irresistible, I knew I'd have to search for years to find a comparable one. I'm under no illusions the paint will need attention at some time, the sunlight has done it no favours, a common problem with Guards Red.
Seen as you have viewed my car and have a baseline, I wouuld say the Amaranth Violet one at Tiger Cars is a 6/10 compared to mine at 9/10.
Seen this? Seems a shame to me, and those seats are fab

Apologies for adding to your pain, just trying to save you a wasted journey on the Amaranth one. It is a puzzle to me however why Roly didn't sell mine sooner, I think it had been with him for about 6 months. Probably just as difficult for the seller to find the right buyer as it is for the buyer to find the right car. My absolute requirements were Sport, top condition, top history. When you think how many Sports were made and how many are left, its always going to be a bit of a wait.
Stick with it and the right one will come along.

No problem, I was only joking...Stick with it and the right one will come along.
Roly had two identical cars a few months back - yours and another. Both sports, both Guards Red, same mileage and same price. I didn't go to look originally because I wasn't sure about the colour, especially as it will have to be street parked some of the time. The first one sold fairly quickly so maybe there is only one buyer for one Guards Red sport at a time!! I'd rather hang on for the right car (for me) but I am getting a little impatient!
Incidentally, did you consider buying privately or was it dealer only for you?
I'll let you know how I get on.
All the best, Stuart
Just a post to say that I am the proud new owner of this car.I felt that I owed it to the car and to the dealer so that in years to come, when someone types in 'Amaranth 968 Sport' into Google and finds this post the car gets a fair hearing.
The car is superb. The dealer(Tiger Racing-who were an absolute pleasure to deal with) wasnt able to answer the questions in great detail simply because he does not know the cars, and took it in a trade sale against one of his racers. He hadn't prepared the car for sale, and I bought it in exactly the condition as it was traded in to him. Before I bought the car,I spoke to Chadspeed from this thread(thanks for taking my call)-and to the previous owner-also a Pistonheads member to find out as much as I could before making the journey. The previous owner purchased the car from Eporsch at the end of 2009,and although used regularly,it has only covered approx 5000 miles since. The car came with the best provenence that I have ever seen in a car of this age, with a full folder of bills, fully stamped and current service book from OPC and Independent specialist(Stratstone,Oak Tree Garage,Eporsch and TWG Sport),the latter having serviced it 500 miles ago.It also has EVERY MOT Certificate, every tax disc(!),and the three original keys.
The interior is absolutely immaculate, with almost no sign of wear whatsoever. The bodywork is original, straight, and except for a couple of very small pin-dents and minor stone-chipping that is really very minor for 18 years of use, excellent. There is absolutely no sign of accident damage, all stickers are present, and panel gaps are as they left the factory.I intend to use the car on a daily basis, and maybe over the winter,I may remove the sill covers and replace with a new set of oversill seals, and refurbish the wheels, but that is it.
The best thing however is the way that it drives, and my 400mile journey home was an absolute joy.The engine pulls very strongly through all of the rev range, brakes solidly from speed, and rides beautifully, with no whines, knocks or vibrations. With a clutch replacement done at 87k,belts up to date, that recent service, and new rear tyres,I hope that theres not much money to be spent in the near future, its even taxed for 9 months!.
And of course,as one of the members said previously-Amaranth really does suit the 968!.Im glad to be back in the Porsche fold after a few years away, and will post up some pics as soon as I get the chance.

Really glad you like the car EVO575, hope my impressions were helpful and not too harsh. How many 968's were made in Violet ?, I'm not saying this is the same car but when I was considering a 968 a few years back one was advertised in this colour and it turned out it had a fair old whack on the front nearside.
What RHD? Well just the one, why? ............... ah I see, ahem.Joking, only joking. I've no idea.
Had my 968 Sport since November, use it as my main daily driver and love it more everyday!
The build quality really hides the age of these cars, tight, sharp with no squeaks or rattles and an amazing clunk to the doors. I love the fact it is still a really analogue car with very few electronics and comparatively simple mechanicals. They need a few revs to really fly (more so than an equivalent modern Porsche) but offer huge grip followed by nice progressive predictable oversteer (I suspect a mid or rear engined car will bite you if not saved by the electronics).
How many left suggests there are currently 183 Sports still on the road and given that it was a UK only model that implies 183 globally!
Good luck with your cars, maybe see you at some Tipec events? (Poole Quay this Friday night for starters).

Not sure of the numbers-but its not that uncommon.Theres another one on PH Classifieds at the minute and I know that theres a guy currently building a race car out of an Amaranth and charting his progress on the forum. As for the damaged one from a few years back,it was certainly not my car-Its completely original!

My ol' 944T was on her original Turbo at 230,000 miles, my Wife's 535D has just thrown the small turbo at 82,000 miles....
I am trying to resurect my 968UK username but have not had a response from the admin yet, will try and get to one or two events with it
Interesting on the numbers left, even less than 944Ts, even more interesting is that there were more 968 Sports than Coupes registered until 2006....
