Does anyone remember walking home from school on Newton Road iirc and seeing the house that was a giant greenhouse?

If you do what was the deal with it?

Tried looking on Google maps but it must've been knocked down.

Tony,

Are you thinking of this?

The story I heard was that he asked for planning permission to build an extension but it was turned down after neighbours rejected, so he built that in his back garden instead.......................

As soon as I saw the thread I wondered about the catamaran, is it still there? As its on google I guess maybe it still is, or at least in the last few years. I had piano lessons round the corner on Diamond hill and it was there then, must have been about 1980. By my reckoning its been there 30 years.

It's been there since I moved up from Cornwall in 1990, to be honest I haven't been up that way for a while so I don't know if it is still there, you certainly can't miss it!

Haha no, I do remember that though.

I used to live in St Denys and on the walk to school (triangle, up the really steep little road then left onto Newton road and it was about halfway down Newton on the left heading to school.

It was like someone had knocked down their half of a same and made a house sized green house type thing.

There was a little sign saying what it was about but being a miserable teenager never stopped to look.

Don't know what made me think of it, but checking google maps and it's gone, along with half the places I used to go frown

Bloody hell!! Old memories!

I heard that catamaran was built by the bloke in his back garden with the intent on getting it craned out once it was finished, but the road surface was too soft to take the weight of a crane so he's never been able to get it out! Probably just one of those school stories you hear, but it is still there now!

Nt sure if its the same bloke that you mention in the OP, but there was a guy on Oaktree Road who had a full on observatory in his back garden and had something built out of glass, cant recall what it was but it was kind of a huge greenhouse jobbie. He lived a few doors down from my aunty when I was a kid all those years ago and we were never allowed to talk to him because of some dispute she had with him about him building it. I do remember a story about him dragging a kiddie into his observatory and 'doing a Saville', but again, this was probably just schoolboy rumours.

I didn't go to Bitterne Park, but my cousins both went there, would have been about '93/'94 when they left at a guess. I grew up just round the corner (off Peartree Ave/Athelstan road) and lived there until my early twenties, about 8 or 9 years ago.

That boat was there in the late 70's as far as I can remember.
