Those things we all leave in the cupboard for 11 months of the year. What's a good one? I'm suddenly gagging for a cheese toastie with those crimped sides only a sandwich maker can produce.

Therefore, no panini presses or dualit sandwich racks, it's got to be a proper one, ideally that has some form of elegant design to it.

I love toasted sandwiches but end up using them and then binning it when it gets too messy.

I haven't bought it yet but was researching them before and I think this one made by Krups would be good :

We have the krups FDE3 (or an earlier variant of it).

It works pretty well for making toasted paninis etc but with one fatal flaw:

It's a complete pain in the backside to keep clean. It's perfectly normal to fill your paninis/sandwiches with cheese, ham and maybe some relishes etc but unfortunately as the weight of the top plate presses down and your food cooks, the fillings squeeze out of the sides and onto the hot plates. These then burn into the griddle grooves and you have to wait until the thing has cooled down before attempting to shift the stains.

It would have been much more helpful if the hotplates could be removed afterwards for soaking and cleaning.

I recently bought this. It does a really good job, and it's very easy to clean. I've even fried eggs on it! More of a panini press than a sandwich maker, but at least you can get a decent amount of filling in there, and the ones that do triangles never crimp the bread properly anyway, they don't give a clean cut, just half an inch of super thick compressed rock hard bread...

Buy this from Argos. Bin it when it gets too messy to use again. Its under a fiver. Although I have found that with continued use and not cleaning the plates with soapy water makes for a better toastie.

I just use a George Forman now, but the parents had a triangular one when I was a kid, used maybe twice over the space of 15 years, was ste, had to cut the bread otherwise it wouldn't close properly, couldn't put too much filling in, otherwise it wouldn't close properly.

I will, but it's coming from the fatherland, so won't be here til next week.

For an underused pain in the arse gadget to earn it's keep, it has to look good too. smile

yes This or the Tesco/Sainsburys cheapo ones, under a fiver IIRC. Basically disposable once they get too dirty. Lived on toasties as a student, never cleaned it, it adds to the flavour hehe
