Hi, I came across this thread and don't have the lifespan to browse three hundred plus pages, though am keen to know what goes on in this neck of PH. There are some very intriguing discussions (btw the essence of maintaining originality is the [i[spirit[/i] of the object, in this case Theseus' McLaren F1). Would someone care to offer me a brief overview of the contents... to date(!)?
300 pages? It's volume 5 - there's a few thousand pages to summarise!

I'll give it a go:

Muppet fraudster (not flemke) pretends to have a F1. Lots of interest, but becomes obvious the bloke is a catfish.

Flemke offered to open a thread about his experiences with his actual, real life F1.

It was smurf blue. Some liked it. Flemke is perhaps a little choosy when it comes to colours...

Then, lots of modifications. No Halfords wings unfortunately, but things like revised uprights, wheels with modern tyres, prototype brakes - proper stuff.

Along the way, lots of little side chats. Typefaces had a run of a month or so. As did racing liveries, other Mclaren F1s, bit of stuff about some other cars/projects, etc.

Car was involved in a crash. When repaired, Flemke finally had to actually pick a bloody colour!

Colour was picked.

Then little flairs were added - stripes and panels, even a little pinstriping.

P1, special edition MSO 650 series - came, were resprayed, went. The mighty Audi A2 remained resolute throughout.

Senna came along. Some people perhaps surprised it's remained, seeing as Flemke has perhaps shown a little consideration for the aesthetics of an object.

Lots of chat about F1s at auction, running costs, high level mirrors, Gordon Murray (crikey - nearly forgot the LCC Rocket, it's logo, etc.), lots of other things.

Generally, the answer to every question ever posed about the F1 resides in this little neck of PH.

I’d also add stuff about his NSX Type-R and the various photoshops of the rear overhang but given my name that’s probably a little niche for your excellent summary.

Now...do you take requests for executive summaries as I have a long list of books I simply can’t be arsed to read but society demands I must like eg Moby Dick.

Nice precis Sway!

Years ago when I was only a lurker I started a technical summary document - got to about the 2nd vol and life took me other directions (kids) which meant time was not available. Looking at the quality of information captured just in Vol 5 it would be great to have a summary document when the volumes were closed so one could get the direct shot without having to wade through all the meanderings & off topic posts - but then they are the reason the thread has legs too! Maybe after I have built my car I will get back to it...

Still have not found out if the eyebrow panels over the headlights are functional - I noticed they came unglued when XP1 was being tested in Namibia.

Anyone have details of the IMechE paper by Steve Randle "Concept and design of the McLaren F1 suspension systems - IMechE paper C466/007/93" - I would like to read it but the nearest copy is in Canturbury university in the South Island of NZ.....

Excellent. Thanks for the summary. Been following this thread for ages but had no idea how it came about. Just assumed from the title somebody had spotted one and said "is this yours?". Any idea what volume the modifications are in? Would love to have a read about those.

I appreciate your generosity of spirit to have taken the time to fill me in, without a hint of a sneer, akin to a honcho protecting a Kingpin. A McLaren F1 amongst other toys and a predeliction to opening the virtual bonnet amongst friendly car enthusiasts... hello Flemke wavey

Thank you for posting those pages Flemke, the technical insight it provides is superb.

I get a kick out of the experts testing theory against practice - i.e. the ackerman assumptions being dispelled by the steering on the F40 not squealing on a polished floor when pushed around by hand - what a cheap test! even my budget stretches to that level of tech!

Whale and Scary Captain are not exactly bezzie buds. In fact, I'd say the Captain is a little bit chippy.

Everyone goes fishing for whales. The whale goes fishing for whalers.

It’s ok...we just shoot and eat him. And if anyone asks we definitely did not eat a plump breasted pigeon. Just deny everything!

(In other news I feel such a fool for allowing an imposter to pull the down feathers over my eyes. Consider yourself reinstated with a 10% pay rise and a pickled egg as long as you sign the NDA)

No.
Many years ago he crashed but did not total an F1. It was repaired and has had at least two other owners since then.
As to whether it was insured, in the US as in the UK it is illegal to drive an uninsured car on the public roads. It is always possible that it was uninsured, although, as with many his claims, one would not take Elon Musk's word for it.

It seems that some F1s are still seen relatively frequently but a number have not been seen for years.

Are there any F1s which have not been identified? Which ones?
