Hi, wondering if anyone can help on this subject, I just purchased a Renault Clio 172 sport 2 days ago. When Driving there is a loud buzzing/humming noise comming from the rear of the car. The faster I go the louder it seems to get until I hit about 80mph. It's def not a hole in the egsaust. I spoke to a Renault dealer on the phone and they said it might be a bearing thats gone?? But the noise doesn't get any worse on bends and it also doesnt change in pitch with the engine. I've taken a few people out in it and they havn't got a clue what it is either. Any good adivce would be appeciated. Thanks B.

Checked all the supports/ bolts etc, there all on fine. It's not like a lose knocking sound, it's a constent deep humming, buzzing noise, gets very loud.

Could be -

internal exhaust/cat damage.

Rear wheel bearing - most bearings start making noise and humming long before there is play in them.

What happens at 80mph and above? Does the noise stop?

On your, erm, private test road naturally.

Hi,

What tyres does it have on? Mine had new wheel bearings (under warranty) because of a similar noise, but the problem turned out to be the Pirelli P zero tyres I had fitted! Went back to the original Conti sports, and the noise disappeared!!

Just been out in it again with a guy who knows a bit about cars, we established that the noise stops when I turn the car left, not sure if it's comming from the front or back now, but it does start at about 20 mph and gets louder. He said mayby something to do with the disks or pads not being aligned properly. He said def not a bearing problem as the steering wheel is steady as is the gear nob. on a private road, over 80mph it seems to get quiter. HELP?

I honestly can't remember what tires are on there, I'll check, I know there about 1 month old, the guy I bought it off said the noise has been on the car since he had it from last June so I don't think it's a tire problem. He said I thought it was just a noisy car....I dont think so pal.

It could be the plastic liners on the rear wheel arches catching on the tyres. I had this. Try taking of the rear wheels and see if its been catching.

I had a problem with a buzzing noise on my car and after some weeks of frantic searching my son discovered it was the .... .....wiper blade arm!

Bt of duct tape later - job done.

First port of call is the tyres. Go through each one replacing it with the spare.

Girlfriends vibrator?

ON a serious note, as the Renault is front wheel drive you won't get any feedback from the gear lever as it has nothing to do with the rear axle.

You could check the wheel nuts, then try getting the rear wheels balanced 'cos if a wheel weight has fallen off it will cause the wheel to vibrate. If none of these, try getting the alignment done on the rear wheels as it is possible that the rear has been curbed and the wheels are no longer aligned correctly.

My favourite would definitely be you have lost a rear wheel weight.

I know its not a Clio but I had this problem on my Corsa for months. It only did it when I raeched 50 and no noise when I did roundabouts. Turned out to be the rear wheel bearing.

Funnily enough, I asked a garage to 'fix the problem' and left it with them for the day, he called me during the day to say 'its a bearing' he changed the front bearings and I picked it up.
Noise still there.
Was off on holiday the next day so I couldnt leave it with them for any longer, so he didnt charge me for the bearings, as the problem wasnt fixed.
Few weeks later took it to another garage and they changed the rear bearings, noise gone. Bargain.

I've got a full exhaust system for one of these that I'll swop for beer money. The rattle tends to be the baffles, I got this exhaust as a spare as we had a 2002 car from new that had three exhausts in its 40,000 miles. Sold the car before I fit number 4.

Almost certainly exhaust related, check cliosport there will be tonnes on this...

If I were you I would take the advantage of this and give the car back to Renault... They all fall apart eventually!!!!
