I'm hoping someone can help me here.

I used a mobile phone recycling comparison site and Music Magpie were offering the most for daughters iphone 5c. I sent it off and a few days later had an email saying the phone had a lcd pixel issue so offered £10 instead of the £97 I=originally indicated. I declined it and they said it would be returned 4-5 days later.

I finally received it today (12 days later) and the phone looks like it's been bent and the phone is coming away from its casing. I called Music Magpie and the chap said he has a pic of the phone when it arrived with them and it was like it is now. I know 100% it wasn't like that, why would I have wasted my time sending it. I've now sent an email to their complaints department but I fear they will argue and it will be my word against theres.

is there anything I can do to take the matter further as I basically am now stuck with a phone which they have clearly damaged somehow?? Pic attached of the damage done!

Thanks

So when MM got the phone all they mentioned was a pixel issue but didn't bother to mention the phone was falling apart? Surely if it had arrived in that condition they'd have notified you straight away.

Also, it might not be MM but the courier that caused the damage. I take it the box it was returned in was undamaged?

i can't remember the actual phrase they used as to why the declined it but it was something to do with the lcd screen pixels.

bloody livid to be honest.

i sent it properly in bubble wrap etc and it came back in a fragile box. it's damaged that badly that i very much doubt it could be done in transit

They've basically tried it on and expected you to accept the poor offer.
When you declined it appears the have maliciously damaged the phone.

You would need the original email, but I'd take it to small claims.

Isnt this a standard scam by these recycling companies. Fake a problem and reduce the quoted offer they gave? A lot of people then accept the new offer as it is too much hassle to return and risk damage in transit, and also because of stories like this.
I would check the IMEI number too as it is not uncommon for them to return a different phone and keep your perfectly good one to sell on the black market.
I'm sure a lot of people are happy with he service they received, but it definitely goes on and its a risk you take using these companies.
CEX would have given you 70 quid in person.

i'll see what the complaints dept say and take it from there. I think it could be a farce though!

who would be the people to speak to if they argue the case, is it trading standards??

Yup, I've had an issue with two phones from two different companies, claiming that there was something wrong with the different phones I've sent them. I just asked for the phones to be sent back and took them to CEX. Much easier to deal with.

Doesn't help you but that fault is relatively common on the 5c so it should be easily fixable.

These 'recycling' companies are all the same, sharks.

I used to have one such company on the books as a client and the scams they dream up to make a buck is unreal, they charged companies to strip out all their old gear then canalise them to sell into the second hand market. The drives that are supposedly 'shredded' to avoid data theft etc are simply formatted and reused.

I can't see why anyone would want to deal with theres types of companies, I inderstand it's probably easier but as has been shown here, it will come with its problems.

Never had an issue with anything I've sent to Music Magpie. Not once have I been offered less than I was quoted, and nothing has needed to be returned.

The most recent was a iPhone 5s last month - which I was offered & paid £162 for within the week.

Sold an iPad the year before and all was fine too - as is has been with the hundreds (over about 5 years) of CDs/DVDs.

I sold to o2 recycle, and it was an easy thing to do. sent off my old iPhone, agreed price so sorted payment. I found out that night that competitor was offering it £50 more. Phoned them up, they said, oh yeah, we'll authorise another payment. It was all pleasurable. I think they do it in store too.

Here's their reply!

Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention.

I am sorry to hear that the service has not met your expectations. I have investigated this matter and would like to apologise if you feel the service was inadequate in any way.

Orders which contain electronic items initially go straight to our electronics extraction department; a highly secure area monitored by CCTV and security patrol with management presence on site at all times. This is to ensure that no damage has occurred in transit, and to log the devices condition upon its arrival.

A record is made of all items received and each box / parcel is inspected carefully before opening with a log being kept of the condition of the box (whether it has been tampered with or damaged in transit). The box was recorded to be in good condition with no damage whatsoever or signs of having been tampered with.

When the item is quality assessed, we make no attempt to open the device. The condition for the item is based purely on a visual inspection, so there is no likelihood that a member of our staff attempted to open the phone when it was in our care.

As we have no evidence that the item was damaged in transit, or in our care, we must assume that the item was sent in the condition we found it in and as such we are unfortunately unable to take any further action in this case.

So ask to see these "detailed" logs they keep of your job.
Notice that they didnt go as far to state that YOU sent them a bent phone (I bet because that isnt logged).
Doesnt sound like the great service everyone else is claiming they got.
Unless you want to just write off the phone, write to someone at the top and threaten lots of hassle and legal letters.

Providing it's not "broken" then yes, even apple will charge no more than around £100.

Anyone else had any issues with them? Securely packed up a PS4 which was in mint condition and have just got the dreaded email from them that it is faulty due to casing damage. Either they are BSing (fair few bad reviews out there about damage/revised offers), or it’s been swapped for a broken one at their end, or it was used as a football by Parcelforce before it got there. Pretty gutted as I didn’t take photos of it before I sent it off and don’t have the serial number - guess I’m ****ed frown

I’ve asked for it back anyway and also asked them for photos of the damage etc.
