Caterham breaks sales record (again)

Super 60th anniversary year for the Seven sees 2016 record busted

Nothing like a cheery news story of British sales success to brighten up a particularly grim Monday, is there? Today, it's from Caterham, which is celebrating 60 years of the Seven in style with a sales record.

While a number hasn't been released, Caterham has stated in a jolly release that last year's "record haul of over 600 orders" has been surpassed again with two months of the year still yet to run. An impressive achievement on its own, but all the more praiseworthy given the previous record had stood since 1996.

One assumes that success will be partly due to it being a 60th anniversary year; if you'd been saving up for a Caterham, why would you buy it in the Seven's 59th year? In addition there was the rapid sellout of the Supersprint, plus another packed Academy grid, and the introduction of the 310 in the heart of the range, to help the cause.

"For the Seven to reach 60 and to continue to be such a sales success is a huge achievement... We continue to prove the Seven is a timeless classic" said CEO Graham Macdonald, adding that "we will continue to ensure the future of the Seven is bright."

Excellent news for Caterham then, but that also means a new Seven order will be a fair way from arriving on your drive. And, as discovered with our Fleet build, the options can soon add up... If you must have one now (and autumn is a great time to get a deal on a sports car) then the PH classifieds are crammed with Sevens. As many as 177 of them, in fact.

This Superlight R looks perfect, packing a 200hp K-Series, a limited-slip diff and a six-speed manual in a lovely BRG, Series 3 body. But there's everything, from a nearly-new Superlight 20 to a crossflow-engined Supersprint from 1996. Take your pick!

Great news smile

The fact that the Seven is even more popular now, is an indication that modern sports cars are too fast, too heavy and too safe to give thrills at sensible speeds.

Downan, you are completely correct in your assumption there. All of the reasons I'll never buy a modern sports car. As these are new, but drive like an old car, it's a win-win!

Hurrah for the Lotus 7 I suspect Colin Chapman would be bemused and delighted his design is still going and have to say that if it wasn't for the passion of Graham Nearn and all those involved over the years including the current custodians the 7 would be consigned to history so well done to all...... (must polish mine at the weekend).

Good to see Caterham doing well. They have carved out and cornered a good niche.

Probably Westfield, I should think?

Probably Westfield - they used to run at over 400 cars per year, and indeed may have exceeded Caterham's figures on occasion.

They've lost the plot a bit in recent years, though (some would say ever since their founder, Chris Smith departed), which may have contributed to Caterham's current 'success'.

After having a second hand R400d which I loved with no dealings involving Caterham, then buying a new 420R in Jan 2017 from Williams Automobiles I'll never buy another.

The worst customer care you can imagine and a simple car that should have no issues.
The car was sold with 600miles on it and I regret buying it after a truly unpleasant ownership experience from the second it arrived on a trailer to my house. Some Caterham owners have said you have to expect these issues with a kit car that costs £40,000!

Well I don't.

Wouldn't be at all surprised if it was someone selling Cobra reps in the States. Aren't Factory Five one of the big ones?

'The Fur Coat Suzuki Specials' are fantastic fun on the road. Geared to around 60mph in 3rd, you spend most of your time 'flat' going at speeds which are socially more acceptable, revelling in making spirited progress.

The 155 tyres provide limited grip meaning, again at safer speeds, you get the car 'talking to you'. If you are at Oakmore, test drive the grey 160. That was my car. I had an LSD from Japan imported for it, and the wheels save 1.4kg per corner. It slides progressively at ridiculously slow speeds and is one of the most fun cars out there. I had this and a 620r. Preferred the 160 on the road.

I'm lucky enough to have Chasis 60 coming on the SuperSprint, and can't wait....

If you want something to drive really quickly from Caterham, go racing. I've just finished my Academy year.... now that's proper fun!

Cheers Chris

Interesting. I was going to start a thread saying what's going on with Westfield. At one point they seemed to go toe to toe with Caterham, but I've heard nothing from them in recent years.

Just went on their website and see they do a car using the S2000's engine and gearbox; surely must be an awesome bit of kit!
