McLaren aims to be big in Japan (again)

720S GT3 will see McLaren back in Japanese sportscars, with a familiar livery...

In the discussion around favourite McLaren F1 liveries - surely a regular conversation between many petrolheads - there are plenty of worthy candidates: Fina, Ueno Clinic, Harrods, Gulf and so on. Now another of those iconic paint schemes, the Lark pink and graphite, is being resurrected for a new McLaren racing car.

This 720S GT3 will race in Japan's Super GT300 and Super Taikyu this year, sporting a livery made famous by the F1 back in the 90s. Indeed the McLaren Customer Racing Japan team will be led by Kazumichi Goh, his team having won the 1996 JGTC with an F1 GTR. Two cars will be prepared, one for GT300 and one for Super Taikyu; both will also compete in the Suzuka 10 Hours, which is round four of the Intercontinental GT Challenge. The pink and graphite GT3s will be driven by Seiji Ara and Alex Palou in GT300, with the latter also driving alongside Sena Sakaguchi Takayuki Kinoshita in Super Taikyu.

Goh described the rekindled partnership as "very special indeed", describing the performance of the 720S as "extremely positive" and looking forward to "enjoying the taste of success together again very soon." Deliveries of the GT3 are set to begin in the coming weeks, with the McLaren Customer Racing Japan team the third to take on the new 720S.

Far from the biggest news you'll hear today, granted, but it's nice to see heritage continued to be recognised by a company as committed to progress as McLaren. Plus, well, let's be honest; it proffers an opportunity to look at Lark-liveried F1 videos. See below for a reminder of why Fuji Speedway, that V12 and a manual gearbox will always absolutely rule.

Would be even cooler with a wavy 'Union Jack' Flag down each side.

It's got an air of 90s Group C prototype to it.
I think it looks absolutely fantastic.

Awesome colours and car, but McLaren please loose the silver spoiler uprights and make them black. porsche spent years making rubbish looking silver GT 911 uprights, finally now they are black and look soooo much better for it.
