Ferrari 812 Superfast Spider leaks

812hp drop top and convertible version of the new F8 Tributo have been papped at a private event

Images of what look to be Spider versions of Ferrari’s 812 Superfast and new F8 Tributo have leaked onto social media, suggesting they’re set for official reveal in the very near future. The pictures show an open-top 812 on stage, as well as illustrated sketches of both it and a convertible version of the 720hp F8. The latter will come as no surprise, what with each of its predecessors spawning drop-top variants. But the arrival of an 812 Spider starts a new trend in the lineage.

With so much power on offer from both the 812 and F8 coupes, don’t expect the addition of electric folding roof gubbins to have much impact on straight-line performance. The hard-top models both hit 62mph in 2.9 seconds and history suggests there’s likely to be no perceivable drop in acceleration with the convertibles. And we’re not expecting any changes to engine output because, well, the 812 and F8 aren’t exactly lacking.

However, unlike McLaren and its carbon tub cars, Ferrari’s mostly aluminium models will almost certainly lose some structural rigidity with the transformation. That being said, the Maranello firm did a pretty fine job of clawing it back with the 488 Spider, suggesting the only real penalty for the upcoming convertibles will be added weight. The visceral gains, however, will likely be substantial – particularly for those in the already very vocal 812. We await official word from Ferrari with interest…

Rag top?

The V8 Spider not been a "rag top" since the 430.

I thought this was going to be a complaint about how the Ferrari 812 suffers from unwanted water ingress around its convertible roof.

As for the car, the rearmost edge of the windscreen surround extends too close to the rear bulkhead imo

The outlines on the last photo make it look like a Corvette...

Other than that, imagine the V12 noise without a roof.

Can anyone think of a "convertible" with a smaller roof opening as a percentage of the overall length of the car?! That open top is tiny. Purely one for the posers and grey haired Monaco residents.

I am a fan of the coupe version - lovely blue one delivered today

Loving the look of the convertible 812.

Confident it will be just as well sorted as the Coupe, but with the details of the V12 scream heightened.

Looks like someone pinched its front and rear and stretched hard. The rear pulled out and up.

I’m sure it’ll be a riot to drive, it’s just a shame it doesn’t look better.

The convertible looks like a cartoon car in that picture.

The design is so heavy handed with the exaggerated long bonnet, high waistline and stubby, high rear end.

I thought they always did convertibles of the v12 cars but just limited run with massive price tags?

Would be a change if regular model anyone can walk in and buy.

'Convertible'? We seem to be getting very loose with this description - even calling it a Spider/Spyder is pushing it, when it is basically a Targa at best. But an actual convertible, when you are only basically taking out something the size of an average sunroof? Nah! They used to do it right back when the 348 and 355 had the 3 distinct body-styles: GTB, GTS and Convertible/Spider, but can't get much 'wind in the hair' in this thing (even if it was grey hair or a wig!).
