Jaguar I-Pace becomes first Ring eTaxi

All-electric SUV joins XE SV Project 8 on Jag's Nurburgring fleet

It doesn’t feel like that long ago that the thought of an EV being driven flat out around the Nurburgring was the stuff of fantasy. But following the Nio EP9 hypercar’s blistering 6:45.9 lap time in 2017, it’s like the lithium-ion floodgates have opened. Earlier this year Romain Dumas sent VW’s ID.R around the Green Hell 40 seconds faster, before Porsche laid down a new gauntlet for production EVs with the Taycan’s 7:42 time. EVs can most definitely clock a time around the 73-corner Green Hell – and in these cases at least, they can do it bloody quickly.

Jaguar has taken a slightly different approach to proving the abilities of its sole EV model, by making it the first Ring eTaxi you can rent a ride in. Adding examples of the 400hp and 513lb ft I-Pace to its existing fleet of XE SV Project 8s, up to three passengers can join a professional racing driver for the full 11.9 miles from Bridge to Gantry – although exactly how many laps the SUV can manage is yet to be revealed.

Under normal conditions the 90kWh I-Pace is claimed to be capable of 292 miles (WLTP), four miles more than Porsche’s just-announced Taycan 4S Performance Plus and enough to do about 24 laps of the ‘Ring. That distance will obviously be significantly reduced when a hot-headed pro is doing the pedalling and there are three adults aboard, though, pushing the I-Pace’s kerbweight well beyond the ‘empty’ 2.2 tonnes. But the I-Pace has more than proved its worth on track thanks to the one-make eTrophy series that supports Formula E, in which the racers compete for 25 minutes plus one lap. With that in mind, we imagine even a fully laden eTaxi should make for a pretty impressive ride.

Whether it’ll offer the excitement of a supercharged V8-powered Project 8 is up for discussion (actually, no it’s not), but with each I-Pace lap costing €149 it seems like an easy way to get prospective I-Pace customers into the car. If there’s a place to prove a car’s worth, it’s there!

Why would you use an SUV style of vehicle as a ring taxi with its higher centre of gravity - surely the Porsche would make more sense at least it has some sporting prowess folks are looking for at the ring.

Its almost sad this is where we have arrived at ie an electric SUV for ring laps.........

I think this is brilliant!

I'm sure it'd be a cool experience to be driven professionally in such a surprise package! Imagine cutting through traffic in total silence?!

Fair play Jaguar! This is very cool!!

And then you can go old school in a Supercharged V8 straight after.....what's to complain about?! biggrin

I don't think Jaguar would be up for buying a Porsche to use as a 'Ring Taxi. hehe

It's described as a SUV but the dimensions aren't really - it's a barely raised hatchback at only 1565mm tall. Outgoing M5 was 1467mm.

Also, I suspect its centre of gravity will be as good as, if not better, than the petrol engined saloons as the batteries are mounted so low.

We just got ours and i really ragged it on the last part of journey home to southern france which is all a fantastic mix of country roads very similar to the ring and i have to say its pretty impressive, ive had 30-40 odd petrol head cars over my time (still have some) and the ipaces ability to sling shot out of an apex is astounding, its low c of g makes for very confident driving and you can be quite agressive with it, 90-100 mph sweepers with undulations show its weak area most but for a 2.2t car its pretty impressive

I reckon it’ll be quite good tbh.

I’ve enjoyed laps with Dale in both the Ring Limo and Ring Cat, and hope I will enjoy a lap in this too at some point in the near future. It will be fascinating to see what it can do.
Who knows, maybe he can write about it for PH too like he used to 😉

Just last week we rented out curbrough sprint circuit with 15 mates.

Variety of cars - from full on stripped 350bhp track cars, M3s etc. Fastest lap of the day was by one of these jags (granted it was wet)

149 euros per passenger?! Surely not, that would mean 447 euro per lap (if you went with 3 people), which is way more than the old XJR, & the Schirmer M3 that Apex run, and I think I know what i'd rather do a lap in!

It isn't always about the fastest lap on the Ring during TF - in fact they've banned timing devices (in as much as they can) to disuade people from racing. With a mix of supermini's, family saloons and road legal race cars on there, mixed in with some motorbikes (a lot less than there was 15 years ago mind) it can be lethal - so they're trying to eliminate the racing element. Unsuccessfully, in my opinion.
The Ring taxis are entertaining, i.e. getting a big XJR 575 sideways at every opportunity. The iPace will do just fine on there. Of course it will be overtaken, but not by everyone. I think it interesting that they've launched it late in the TF season, as temperatures are dropping - conditions I think will suit an EV better than the heat of summer. There are no planned major works on the Nordschleife either this year, so TF dates go right through to mid December - weather pending of course.

The Apex Schirmer M3 was €280/car/lap this summer. 3 passengers max. What a car.
The Ring taxi business is a big one - Apex for example do about 40 laps in the M3 per full TF day. That's over €10k per day, which almost covers their insurance, fuel, tyres and brakes ;-)
Jaguar have the Project 8 on their website at €199/'co-pilot'. The XJR is listed as €199/passenger, up to 3 passengers. Much more expensive than Apex on that model. Maybe that's why the Jags don't appear to do as many laps.
Who remembers when BMW were the only ones to offer a Ring taxi? There were no walk-ups, and it was very cumbersome to book in advance. The modern system of multiple vendors is much better.

Probably worked out because it can't do as many laps as a petrol/diesel car without needing a lengthy recharge, but to still make the same in one day as the others?

While this is good PR I bet it's also excellent for putting more development time on the car itself. I bet there will be more than a few tweaks that will be tested here before being rolled out into production.

I mean maybe, but I can't think of anyone who would pay up that much more to go in a much more pedestrian car. I'd imagine the JLR HQ nearby has fast chargers anyway, so wouldn't be out of action for long.

Perhaps i'm missing the point, this is most likely a ploy by Jag to promote Electric - would definitely make an interesting lap!

It's already had some fairly hard laps round there during development wink

It's €149 PER LAP... €50 PER HEAD. The XJR was €249, €83 per head. I've been driving taxi laps here for nearly 12 years and this is a constant source of confusion for everybody 🤦‍♂️

I reckon it will consume electrickery at an alarming rate around there, in the real world it gets about 240miles from a full charge.
