My father purchased 2 tickets from Gatwick to Tampa through Skyscanner but inadvertently made a typo in his email address. He never got a confirmation so called BA who had no record of his booking so told him to go ahead and book again which he did.

Upon returning he found that BA had charged him twice so called for a refund which they have now refused as apparently you have to call for a refund before you fly. He said he didn't get a bank statement before he flew as the tickets were only booked a week or so before travel but they won't budge as it is in their terms and conditions.

Any advice on how he can get his £800 back?

BA are notoriously difficult to get refunds from. They will make things as difficult as possible where they are in the wrong - when you are in the wrong it will be very tough.

Get yourself in to https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/british-airways-ex... for some very knowledgeable advice.

The PH poster GCH is/was very active in there (I've stopped going in there due to not having Avios to spend rofl )

Ouch. Tricky one this as technically he will be seen as a "no-show" on the first ticket which as it's likely non-ref/non-change will just be a cancellation with taxes back.

I think normal channels will not get him very far. He will need to go up the BA tree, Did he pay by credit card? Any mileage in this route?

Flyertalk is definitely a good place to ask.

I've posted a question on flyertalk so hopefully that will help. To answer your questions I'm not sure how he paid yet but it would have been some form of card, I'll have to ask. He wouldn't have got any miles as he normally doesn't fly BA. I'm hoping they have a voice recording from when he called customer services and they told him to book it again. He's a bit old and doddery and hardly loaded so having to pay £1200 for a return to Tampa is a bit hard to take.

You are going to be limited to 5 comments over there initially, but I'm on there too. So can help you with that if you run out answering the questions you are already getting.

Just to provide an end to this thread, my father called BA last week to ask for a copy of the transcript of the call where they told him to book again. They were really uppity on the phone and wanted to know which call centre he spoke to. He had no idea which of their many centres he was routed to but they said he only had once chance of guessing. A week later they called back and gave my father a full refund, they said they couldn't find the transcript but thought it was the right thing to do. I don't believe for a second that they couldn't find the transcript but the correct result in the end thankfully.

That's good! I thought you'd be in for a longer fight so hats off to BA for doing the right thing. Maybe someone in CS does have a heart (and a sixth sense for bad PR) after all.

Thanks for letting us know - so often we never get to hear how a story ends.
