Hi All,

So a bit of rant and a question at the same time.

I haven't been an angel in the past, but I've done my time. Now I have an unspent conviction for life. (6 year sentence, 3yr inside 3yr on license). Non violent and non sexual.

I always declare everything to insurance. Currently using the car for fast food delivery and have the appropriate insurance to do so (£252 per month).

Now want to get a normal policy as will no longer be using the car for work from next month, but all the comparison sites go mad when you tick that box regarding unspent convictions.

£750 without declaring non motoring convictions, £3300 when I tick that box!

Am I really that much more of a risk? And will be deemed so for the rest of my life??

Usually use directline since they don't ask for criminal convictions, but they are not competitive at all this year. Neither are Liverpool Victoria nor Churchill (who also don't ask regarding non motoring offences).

3yr NCB, no claims for 4 years and clean licence. 34 years old.

This is all on a stock car. I was planning on mods in near future. Any suggestions as to which brokers may be okay with non motoring convictions?

Car is a MK6 GTi.

Many thanks

That seems unreasonably harsh! I don't remember mine ever being like that. If you don't mind me asking, could the nature of the offence make it worse? (Fraud, theft etc)

They don't even ask the nature of the offence. Just a simple question. No details or dates etc asked. A simple yes or no if you like.

Most criminal convictions either automatically exclude you from getting quotes on comparisons sites or they quote a stupid amount to deter you. Remember that comparison sites are mainly for vanilla people driving vanilla cars living in vanilla houses and having a conviction is Neapolitan to them. biggrin

You are better off going to a broker for quotes - there are many that specialise in ex-cons.

You need an old fashioned broker, prices are determined by actuaries who are only interested in the numbers. Broad brush people with convictions must be this much of a risk. You need your specific situation assessed.

Insurance pricing is statistical so it is almost certain the pricing is a correct reflection of the insurers experience where that option is selected. In that sense it isn’t harsh as such as the first comment said.

With things like this you’ll likely be better off with a specialist than a mainstream insurer - similar to people with IN10 motoring endorsement etc. Hopefully someone with experience of something like this will be along shortly to recommend one. smile

Any ideas on a broker who may be okay with this and soon planned mods?

Suppose it depends on the nature of the conviction?
Which would be requested when you actually take the insurance out

I think the trick would be to find an insurance company that dont ask the question.

Some big names including Churchill, LV and Direct-Line only ask the question - "“Have you had any motoring offences including convictions, endorsements, fixed penalties, bans or points in the last 5 years?”

I’d stay away from any modifications for a while.
(… that would be like putting a flake and hundreds & thousands on top as well).

Hopefully this guide will help explain:

https://www.moneysupermarket.com/car-insurance/dri...

The interesting thing is that they illustrate that Insurance for an ex-offender can be nearly 3 times more expensive:

Does the driver have a non-motoring conviction? Average annual premiums

No £617.03

Yes £1,599.65

Your best bet would be to google car insurance for ex-offenders and some broker suggestions come up.

Many thanks for the replies y'all.

I think it's just a combination of factors which means it's never gonna be easy to insure me/my car.

OL postcode (northern mill town)
Surname: Khan
Golf Gti innit bro
Ex con

However directline were less than 750 last year but want 1600 this time. Don't need a policy for another 30 days anyways so il shop around via brokers etc.

I don't think they're allowed to take your name into account when quoting!

Try getting quotes answering No to that question then call a few and explain your situation - if anything it will let you know how much your quoted premium is being loaded. If it's a crime of dishonesty (theft, housebreaking etc) then that's an automatic no for a lot of insurers. Your surname can't have an effect (auditors would have a fit). Speaking to brokers is likely your best bet though, the comparison sites are only really suited to low risks.
