Just returned from an absolutely fantastic corporate day at PalmerSport in Bedford (www.palmersport.com). As an owner of a tiptronic 2002 996 C4S I very much looked forward to giving their new 996 C2's a spin round the autodrome. Their 996 cars had been modified and now included a true paddle shift rather than the little steering wheel buttons. I'm not sure if they’ve replaced the entire gearbox or if it’s a standard tip box with just the paddle conversion. Either way, the paddles where soooo much nicer to use.

Does anyone know of any independents who can do a button to paddle conversion and how much it's likely to cost?

Interesting conversion and how cool would those paddles be? Certainly gets my vote over buttons any day. What we really need though is a DSG (twin-clutch seamless transmission)

I had the DSG paddle-shift in my 3.2 TT Coupe and it is the best gearbox i have ever used IMO.

I'm hoping that now Porsche own 20% of VW that they'll start using it instead of the awful tiptronic.

I read (i think in GTPP) last month that Porsche are ~18 months away from releasing a DSG equivalent box.

Really?? Wow, in that case i'll be trading my Cayman in for a DSG variant if they do go through with it.

I cannot believe how much i miss the DSG........my fingers are always 'searching' for those paddles as i accelerate through the revband.

cheers for the info.

My time wasn't anything to write home about. At the time of my run the track was wet but it wasn't raining. I'm pretty sure we took the Porsches round the south circuit. My time was 81.08 seconds. The fastest on the day was 76.86 (which was achieved on a dry track).

I spent ages trying to get paddles for my TT after i bought as i had an RS6 with them (and they seemed faster doing manual changes than changing with the stick) and thought how difficult could it be to convert buttons to paddles. There is a wheel that has only one round button (- on the left , + on the right) but that costs a whopping £1k.

I am going to contact Palmer motorsport and see what the craic is ...

Ok - so I have contacted Palmer Motorsport and they tell me that they did all the development work on this. I have left my contact details and they are going to let me know next week whether they would consider doing the same for customers.

IF (and it's a big if at the moment) they would then obviously volume may drive down cost so I would be keen to know whether anyone else is interested in paddles for a 996 Tiptronic (turbo or not) ?

Guess there could be warranty issues with Porsche but hope that could not affect the motor which is the expensive bit to cover ...

If you do have it done, try and save your tip wheel with the buttons; you can have them wired to turn the CD player up and down.

I thought that Porsche were involved in the original development of the Audi DSG gearbox ?

I know it's only been nine years since you asked, but did Palmersport ever get back to you on this?

I thought they were sequential boxes, I recall being told to use the clutch on downshift but no clutch on up shift.

I had mine done here: http://www.edition9.co.uk/4.html great service and job - even sourced me a manual wheel so I could keep the Tiptronic one.

Single best mod you can do to the car - totally transformed it! Nice friendly guy to deal with too!
