For years we have been using a onetel email address for our home emails, and 2 days ago suddenly we've been unable to send emails. Receiving is not a problem, but sending is.

Incoming POP3 server is mail.onetel.com
Outgoing SMTP is mail.btconnect.com

It has always worked for years, but now doesn't.

We get the following error message on trying to send email:

The message could not be sent because the server rejected the sender's e-mail address. The sender's e-mail address was 'xxxx@onetel.com'. Subject 'Hello', Account: 'Onetel', Server: 'mail.btconnect.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 <xxxx@onetel.com>... Not permitted', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC78

I've spent the last 90 minutes on the phone to BT technical support who finally told me that I needed to use the onetel SMPT servers to send email (which doesn't work either), but I use exactly the same set up as aove in the office and have no problems.... (both run off the same wireless broadband connection.)

Anyone got any suggestions what to do, cos I am at wits end...

Ta muchly in advance.

My first reaction to your post is that you're getting caught out by anti-spam (anti-relaying) functions. Your BT SMTP (sending) mail server looks at the onetel part of your e-mail address and rejects it because it is not authorised to send mail for that domain. Then if you try to send via onetel, it rejects because it can't authenticate you, and you're trying to send from a different internet provider.

You could maybe try setting the outgoing SMTP mail server to the onetel one, and checking the box "this mail server requires authentication" and enter your onetel username and password.

When you say that it works from the office do you mean on the sae internet connection, or is it a different internet provider? (Different internet providers apply diferent spam filtering policies).

It seems quite common for mail providers to only accept mail from their own accounts instead of allowing forwarding. So if you're trying to send from the onetel address you'd need to send via the onetel mail server. Presumably you have a BT email address too, could you send from that account instead?

Speak to Onetel, get them to help you set up outbound via their servers - you probably need to set up auth smtp. ISP's usually have how-to's hidden away on their support website somewhere.

I've tried that, sunbeam. I've changed th smtp top ontel's but I get the same problem - won;t send emails, only recieve. I just get slightly different error message.

With ref to the office, the broadband in the house is the same as the office - via a BT wireless router. It's the same in every respect, but in the ofice I CAN send emails, this time using bt.connect.com as the SMPT but using an alternative POP3 server. I can still send emails from the office.

I've tried changing the SMPT to ontel, but it dos not work (see above!) We do have a BT email address but it's just hassle to send dozens of people emails asking thenm to use an alternative address when it worked fine a few days ago, and still works fine in the office.

I've done that - they say I need to use the BT SMTP as that is the outgoing server...

what you have is a "mail relay" issue - you need to call BT and let them know and authorise a 3rd party account going through their servers - its usually a 2 min phone call as long as you can prove you own the domain!

Yup. I had to do this with BT. It took a few phone calls to get someone who understood what I needed doing though.

You can add the domains / emails addresses to your BT Yahoo account to allow it to send on your behalf. This page will help:
