The car is 2000 year corolla. Speedo only reads in KM/h.

Toyota main dealer reckons it definitely won't, yet the BMW dealer (when I picked up the MINI) reckon it'd be absolutely fine. Who do you trust?!

Strangely I thought there was an issue with with having it reading Km/H over MpH even though they don;t actually check the function! laugh

Not sure exactly, but given the fact that if your speedo isn't working it'll still pass, then I can't really see the point in moaning about what it's reading when it is working.

It is however illegal to have a non-working speedo, so the same may apply to the kmh reading.

My car's speedo is in KM/H and has no problems passing an MOT.

Doesn't even get tested.. Apparently you don't need one for an MOT but if its not working correctly its illegal to drive.. Silly ey.

Visually check :
 For the presence of a speedometer
 That the speedometer can be read clearly
 That the speedometer indicates speed in MPH and KPH (If used on or after 1/4/1984)
Note:
If a vehicle has been issued with a Department’s Approval Certificate (SVA), the
speedometer is only required to be marked in MPH.
 The relationship between MPH and KPH are reasonably accurate where they are
displayed together
REASON FOR REJECTION
1. Speedometer:
a. not fitted
b. can not be clearly read
c. does not indicate speed in MPH and KPH (If used on or after 1/4/1984)

How do they check it?

They don't drive the vehicle at all, not at all, only a brake test which I'd be suprised if they were reading the speedo rather than the roller measurements.

I think it'll pass an MoT but should fail an SVA, but I'm not certain. In practice they certainly do pass MoTs.

It'll pass. A speedo in furlongs per fortnight will pass.

I speak as an MOT tester.

Indeed, it will pass an MOT but not an SVA or equivalent.

If they car is already UK registered, then happy days!
It's still on swiss plates- the DVLA will not give it british plates until it's MOT'ed and insured here. Apparently.

Then I think you might be a bit screwed. When I brought my Alfa in to the UK 3 yrs ago (from Luxembourg) it had to have a MPH speedo for the import process.

An approved garage has to provide paperwork accrediting things like

-MPH speedo
-Correct headlamps
-Correct positioning of rear fog light
-Presence of seatbelts

This is sent off to some government agency (sorry cant remember the name) who then send you back an official document which you need to show at the DVLA office to complete the import process.

If your car only has one rear fog this will also need to be switched to the UK 'side'.

ETA:

If you know a friendly garage that doesnt mind lying to her Majestys gubbernment about the speedo - then its happy days again!

My estima failed the mot (northern ireland) last year for the speedo only being marked in km/h although it also failed on the headlights being crap so if it was the only fault they may not have mentioned it. It had, presumably, passed several mot's previously without it being mentioned prior to me buying it.
