I realise this post is not specifically Porsche, but I am sure there are some of you out there in same position and can offer some advice.
After many miles, and years of driving, one stupid lack of concentration has resulted in first speeding ticket.frown
So want to purchase a speed camera detector. Which is best one to go for ?

Cheers

I had a snooper but when I changed to a Mac found that it was not supported. So I have a TomTom now which is not as good as the Snooper but hasn't let me down so far!

I have a cameralert app for my iPhone. It is very good - with the database updated regularly and sights listed including mobile sites as well as fixed ones. The only problem is that when pressing on with pse on it is hard to hear the audible warnings but otherwise thoroughly recommended. My sympathies for the ticket but one really shouldn't make any difference to insurance etc. It is just annoying..

Thanks for advice Gents, much appreciated.

Really annoyed with myself, but I suppose in this day and age it's so easy to get caught out.

The PocketGPSWorld database is good, and can be used on any number of devices. Cameralert is their iPhone/Android app, but also works on Garmin/TomTom and OEM SatNav etc.

After a few too many close scrapes I went with Driveprotect - the same company does a decent detector too.

Usually these days I drift around saving petrol but the buggers are so desperate for my money I still feel the need for some backup.

This one is good. You can even sync the camera locations to make POIs on your sat-nav/ Iphone tom tom app.

maplin do one, the name escapes me and I don't have full access at work, but it's tiny, £60(bought mine on offer at £40) free updates for life, and sits on a magnetic disc that I have put on the steering column cover, so that I don't have to put it away as its barely visible from outside the car.
It has no display, but is loud enough, and very easy to use and update

I have a micro road pilot. It's hard wired in, pretty discrete easily updated. The database has all of Europe on and has been invaluable on some European trips.

The audio warning is a simple bleep that is easily heard, and won't sound at all unless exceeding the limit when approaching a camera.

Mine came with an optional laser sensor as well if you want to fit something like that, Although I am not sure if it would be worth it these days as I suspect that mobile camera technology has moved on.

also worth noting, you can get it hard-wired in.

my dad has his pogo alert wired into the fuse box so there is no cable running to the cigarette lighter. the cable from the unit is very neatly tucked under the dash and into the fuse box so you can't actually see the cable. it turns on when the ignition comes on. works very well IMO. dealer should be able to do this, or an auto-electrician.

Only problem with hard wired in ones, is that it invalidates OPC warranty if you have one.

I was told I had to remove mine if I wanted to renew.

his is on an M3 (is this where i run and duck for cover? biggrin - he wanted a 911 but a new baby meant back seats were a must) and it was BMW who suggested he hard wire it hehe maybe they could read his speeds from the key? rofl

that's a shame it voids the warranty, guess it can't be done then!

either way - pogo alert is my suggestion. expensive, but well worth it IMO.

i'm one of 3, i'm 22 (yet the new young'un is just 1....that's not right hehe) and the other is 7. he can't fit 2 kids in the back, 1 with a baby seat and baby clobber in the boot (e.g. pram). he tried it, but no success hehe with the mrs up front. just didn't work unfortunately.

anyway, don't want to turn this into a thread saying why he couldn't get one hehe
