Classic fast Fords being worth a lot of money certainly ranks under the 'tell us something we don't know' category of automotive news by now. Seemingly anything with a blue oval on its nose and an RS or XR badge on its bum is worth a pretty penny; it has been true for a while, and looks set to continue given recent results.
However, while some have seemed fortunate to enjoy considerable appreciation - nominate your own contender now - certain models are always going to be in demand. And Sierra Cosworth RS500 chassis number one going up for sale, the first of the hallowed 500-car production run, would always cause a stir regardless of what the market was doing.
Finished in white with the reg D112 VEV, this Sierra is the first of four pre-production RS500s. It was the original test vehicle, used "to test all aspects of the car's special components"; given the driving the car was likely subjected to, it should come as no surprise that this car was re-shelled before then being sold.
Having been in Norway from 2007 until this year, the Sierra is now being sold by Silverstone Auctions in its May sale. It's said to be entirely standard bar the top section of the dash and a stainless steel Magnex exhaust. Unsurprisingly the car will be sold with a comprehensive history file, including a report from RS500 expert Paul Linfoot - who helped with our PH Hero story on the RS500 - to verify its status.
The price? Well the estimate is £90,000-£12piston0,000, which of course a tremendous amount of money. Given the current fascination with fast Fords, however, and the potential for two dedicated collectors to duke it out, could a figure beyond that upper estimate happen? We'll find out on may 19th. There are cars suited for more modest budgets though, including this BMW 1 M Coupe, this Tommi Makinen Evo and a Mercedes E500. In fact, come to think of it, they could all sell combined for less than the Sierra...
