The two door S-Class is a car that we rather enjoyed
when we last drove it
, and from the sound of things we'll enjoy it even more next time, Mercedes having announced a nip and tuck for both the flagship
S-Class Coupe
Cabriolet
. The entire range receives updates including the Panamericana grille, as seen on the
AMG GT R
, redesigned bumpers front and rear and new side skirts. There are new wheel options too, as well as OLED tail lights, featuring 66 ultra-flat floating elements, which allow for "highly homogenous light patterns" and "animated dynamic light sequences". Excellent.
Just a regular S560, for reference
Underneath, Magic Body Control is updated, scanning the road ahead and leaning the car into turns to reduce the effect of cornering on the occupants. And inside the Widescreen Cockpit seen in the
E-Class
increases interior wow factor further still.
At the AMG end of the range, the S63 Coupe and Cabriolet have seen their power output upped from 585hp to 612hp, this despite their engines being downsized from 5.5-litres to the 'hot-V' 4.0. The introduction of cylinder deactivation and a new nine-speed automatic gearbox contribute even further to improve efficiency. That extra power is put down through all four wheels too, getting the S63 from 0-62 in just 3.5 seconds; there's no confirmation yet whether the right-hand drive cars will be 4Matic, though we'd be 99 per cent sure...
Should the S63 lack the kudos to impress at the country club, the
S65 Coupe
and Cabriolet are still available with 6.0-litre, twin-turbo V12s. Putting out 630hp and a massive 737lb ft, they have retained the seven-speed automatic of old to handle the high torque loads. Looks like
Brabus aren't the only ones
to struggle with containing excess grunt. The S65 is also only available with rear-wheel drive, meaning it hits 62mph in 4.1 seconds, or over half a second slower than the 'lesser' S63.
We'll look forward to getting behind the wheel soon. In the meantime though, where would you put your money? S65, S63, new Continental GT, or something else? Let us know in the comments below!
