BMW M5 Touring (E61), 2007, 58.5k miles - sold for £38,872*
A German car in an interesting spec has the same sort of gravitational pull to enthusiasts that black holes have to star systems. That’s especially true when said car is an estate, and doubly so when it’s being pulled along by a 5.0-litre V10.
What you’re looking at here isn’t just any old E61 BMW M5 Touring, but rather one of 11 to have been spec’d in Indianapolis Red Metallic. A spec that’ll be familiar to some, as a certain Mr Harris owns one of the other 11 examples, though it's now green and the interior has been retrimmed in orange corduroy. This one’s a little more original, with its red metallic paired superbly with a Sepang Bronze Merino (that’s cream in non-BMW speak) leather interior, while the rest of the car remains in the same condition as when it left the factory. That makes it one of the most desirable examples of one of the most desirable M5s, and as such has set its new owner back £38,872 including the buyer’s fee. That’s serious money no matter how you cut it, but the chances of running into a similarly-specced E61 are close to zero, especially as one of the remaining 11 is now green.
Lamborghini Huracan Performante Spyder, 2018, 30.5k miles - sold for £187,600*
What Lamborghini has achieved with the Temerario is nothing short of astonishing. A twin-turbo V8 that revs all the way up to 10,000rpm and, with a little hybrid assistance, puts out a combined 920hp. It really is very impressive, but the one thing it lacks over its predecessor is noise. Of course, filling the void left by the Huracan’s V10 was never going to be easy, and with new regulations on the horizon that’ll muffle exhaust notes even further, it’s hard to Lamborghini making another ‘baby’ supercar that’ll sound quite as evocative ever again.
That means there’s still strong demand for a good Huracan despite a more powerful and more advanced (and admittedly more expensive) model available. Take this Huracan Performante Spyder, for instance. It’s seven years old and has a respectable 30,516 miles on the clock, plus a full Lamborghini service history, a superb spec and four new tyres, all of which made it hugely appealing for bidders. Once all was said and done, the Giallo Inti Huracan changed hands for £187,600 including the buyer’s premium, which just goes to show how rock solid the values of these Performantes really are.
Subaru Impreza WRX STI Type RA Version IV, 1997, 25.5k miles - sold for £34,041*
Can you believe it took Subaru six years and a new model generation to launch the Impreza STI in the UK? The company reserved early iterations of the original Impreza STIs for its home market, and you bet we missed out on some right gems. The Impreza WRX STI Wagon (which was admittedly never sold here), the epic Type R and, for a proper rally car feel, the lightweight Type RA you see here.
Short of the legendary 22B, the Type RA is up there with the most desirable of the original Imprezas. With Japan’s gentleman’s agreement on capping power at 280 hp firmly in place, Subaru found extra performance by stripping out sound deadening and various other creature comforts to reduce weight. In return, you got a close-ratio gearbox, a faster steering rack, and, best of all, a rally-style roof vent. They don’t come much better than this Version IV, which was imported just six months ago with a mere 25,552 miles covered. Given how difficult it is to find an original RA, let alone one as seemingly pristine as this, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the new owner was willing to spend £34,041 (including the buyer’s premium) to get their hands on it. Sure, there’s huge investment potential here, but you’d be mad not to make the most of it while the sun’s out.
