Replica kit cars have long been providing enthusiasts with a cheaper and often more rewarding way to drive something that resembles their dream car. Many end up looking like monstrosities that will convince absolutely nobody, while others are more impressive and require a keen eye to notice that they’re not genuine. However, there’s a new ‘kit car’ in town that’s been produced by Lego and, well, it is neither of the above.
Lego’s new creation is the Bugatti Chiron you see here, which, to be frank, it is not going to convince anybody of being the genuine model once they get up close. Not even grandma would mistake the car’s million-piece structure for the carbon-body of the real 1,500hp hypercar. Yet it is extremely impressive because, well, look at it! This is a 1:1 scale Chiron, made of Lego. Plus, it can actually be driven...
Lego called upon the real Chiron’s test driver and racing legend Andy Wallace to drive its newly built full-size model, which has 2,304 Lego electric motors that produce a mammoth 5.3hp and 68lb ft of torque. Wallace has previously piloted cars such as the 250mph Jaguar XJR-9LM racer to victory at Le Mans, but on this occasion, he reached a rather terrifying 12mph – 249mph less than the real Chiron can manage.
The whole stunt is undoubtedly part of Lego’s promotion for its recently launched Chiron 1:8 model, which can’t be driven, obviously. But it also shows just how creative a Lego fanatic can be with the company’s products. You never know, maybe this sort of kit could inspire the next Gordon Murray…
