VW Golf GTI TCR orders open

£34k confirmed for run-out Mk7 GTI, with first deliveries in March

There wasn't a lot more to find out about the Golf GTI TCR; we knew what it looked like, what it drove like and even how it compared to its distantly related race car cousin. What did remain unknown, though, was how much it would cost a UK buyer.

Well, now we know that too: £34,135, or a little more than £3k over the £31,100 Golf GTI Performance with three doors and an automatic gearbox. As a quick reminder, the TCR gets upgraded brakes, TCR seats and a bodykit (amongst other things) to distinguish it from the Performance, in addition to an extra 45hp.

UK buyers will also be offered a £2,000 option pack, which removes the speed limiter - meaning 164mph is possible - adds 19-inch wheels to replace the standard 18s and equips the TCR with VW's DCC adaptive dampers, dropping the car 20mm in the process. Expect a good chunk of customers to plump for it; after all, when do you ever see even a regular GTI for sale without the DCC? The 'Pure Grey' TCR signature colour costs an extra £580; if you want to combine that with a black roof, the total additional cost will be £1,130. Leather is £1,750, the 'TCR' honeycomb decals are £550 and a sunroof is £995.

It's easy to imagine most TCRs being at least £35k cars then, and that pitches them against all sorts of tempting rivals. Will Golf GTI enthusiasts be remotely bothered by those? Possibly not. But it's worth pointing out that a Megane Trophy with the dual-clutch gearbox is £33,510, a Mercedes A35 starts at £35,580 and the Civic Type R, albeit with a manual gearbox only, is £33,525 in GT form. The old GTI Clubsport S could be mentioned here as well, but that's rather been done to death recently. Chiefly by us. Point being if you're after a racy hatchback at the moment, there are plenty to choose from!

I'll have a CTR over the TCR, thank you very much.
Go big or go home.

Matt, one assumes that was said with tongue in cheek? If not then you really need to do your research before writing.

DCC is one of the rarest options out there. When I first started looking for a GTI in April/May last year there were a few used ones around to choose from, but nothing with DCC. Due to this I placed an order for a brand new one at the start of the summer thinking I would continue to look for used in-case something came up. The WLTP delays on my order started and when I eventually cancelled my order mid way through the summer I threw myself into the used market significantly all the way through to December (when my order actually surprisingly turned up one night at the dealer.). If you want a used one with DCC then from my experience unless you are VERY lucky you don't stand a cat in hells chance finding the car you 'want'... that is unless you are open to making a serious compromise on spec/colour. In my time searching I could count on one hand the number of DCC equipped GTI's that came up on the used car locator, but even when they did they were ex-demos or not close spec wise to what I wanted.

People think nothing about spending £900 on the bigger 19" wheels but don't want to spend the same kind of money on DCC which improves the car in every situation. IMO DCC totally transforms the car's comfort and sporting abilities, it gives you a proper jekyll & hyde weapon.

Considering you can now get a brand new R for £27,990 before any further haggling you'd have to be mad to pay list for one of these. Even a near new Clubsport S ( a proper special edition) with 1,400 on the clock is less than this TCR.

ah but purists might say an R is not a GTI :P

Personal as a GTI owner I would have spent the extra to get this and I do love those seats.

A golf R under 28k is tempting indeed who is offering that, please?

That's my experience too - they all get the 'mode' button on the centre console, but most don't get the DCC function for the suspension.

We were lucky when we bought our 65 plate PP privately - original owner specced it to around £35k, before discount, with leather, tech pack (Discover Pro and Dynaudio), metallic paint and factory hidden towbar.

Is there an option for leather seats on Golf GTI's / R's?

That cheque pattern is ghastly

I had a Mk7 GTI Performance on standard Passive suspension. It was perfectly fine and at no point did I wish to press a button and make it more bouncy. Or press a button and make it more crashy. The standard set-up is judged really well, and has a good balance between good ride quality and still remaining taut.

Problem with DCC, is that every setting is a compromise. Before DCC, manufacturers set up there cars to be the best between ride and handling. Now, what's the point, as a press of a button will change it all. Why? Because we live in an age where everything has to be configurable within an inch of it's life.

Why I want 7 settings for how fast the gearbox will swap cogs I'm not quite sure.
Why I want 4 different steering weights is beyond me
Why I want to decide if I want to bounce about or wince at a pot hole is way above my head.

Just make the car ride and handle well to start with. Simples

On the TCR. Just a shame no manual. But why make a car fun? Oh I forgot everyone works in the city where the box is more suited.

Yes, we have leather - it's rare on the used market due to influence on PCP rates and the plethora of ex-lease stuff cluttering dealer forecourts for nearly new. There's a couple of different leather options in terms of cost IIRC

DCC in the Golf is very good - for town use comfort takes the edge off an otherwise slightly crashy standard mode. You can also use it on the motorway and it smooths out expansion joints nicely. I didn't notice any meaningfull difference between normal DCC mode and passive suspension, having driven both before deciding it was a 'nice to have but not essential' option.

It's basically only got 3 modes - hard as nails sport - normal - comfort. I never use sport as it engages the silly sound amplifier and makes the gearbox go mental and hold revs everywhere

I think you miss the point of DCC, firstly IMO it is great, it is not a compromise in every mode it's quite the opposite. You can set it to the road conditions or your personal driving style for the journey, you don't have to live with the compromise of having it set for neither comfort or racing (i.e. standard set up on normal suspension) as the car is meant to be for all occasions.... DCC, with DSG and ACC working together really gives you a car for any condition or driving style you fancy.

It’s rare because it’s £2.5k which is mental !

My bad! Still a great price though with just 10 miles on the clock.
