Au revoir Renaultsport: PH Fleet

Ben bids farewell, not just to his Megane, but to all Renaultsport cars. For now, at least. It's been fun...

After a year and 12,000 sensational miles in VU11 WLD, the time has come to move on. Partly to free up funds for my house renovation, partly because I've finished what I set out to achieve, but mostly because life's too short to stick with one car for too long. There are just so many cars out there that I want to own, and having just purchased my 25th car at the grand old age of 31, I've no intention of slowing down anytime soon. Still, I'm sure there are many of you who can put that number to shame!

Sadly it's also time to have a break from Renaultsport, with the Megane 250 being my fourth in as many years. So it only feels right that this article is one of reflection. Up until the time I started working at PH, I'd turned my nose up at Renaults, falling into the trap of years of reliability jokes and the boy racer image. But despite that, I'd always had a hankering for a Clio, which is something Dan took advantage of when he invited me along to a Renaultsport track day at Brands Hatch in 2015.

I fell in love with Renault's very own 182 Trophy and within 24 hours I'd paid a deposit on one and set off on a 570-mile round trip to Devon to pick it up. I was hooked. Ironically, I've covered over 30,000 miles in my various Renaultsports and they've been the most reliable cars I've ever owned. And even when little things did need sorting, they were all cheap to fix. Admittedly rebuilding the Sachs dampers on the Trophy and things like cambelt/dephaser changes aren't exactly affordable, but these are serviceable items at the end of the day, so enough research prior to purchase will have you prepared on what the likely running costs will be.

While I'm on running costs, they were pleasantly surprising too. The Clios would happily return high 30s to the gallon on a longer run and the Meganes lower 30s, which was helpful for my commute from Kent to Twickenham. And even with my 250 having 325hp running through the front wheels, a fresh set of Michelin PS4s outlasted my time with the car.

Coming back to the boy racer image, I didn't realise how wrong I was until I ventured onto a Trophy owners weekend, which has to be the best driving weekend I've ever been on in the UK. The community is alive and buzzing with so many fantastic and helpful enthusiasts; it's one I'll miss, although I doubt I'll be away for long. Even the main dealership aftersales experience has been great at every dealer I've been to. Particularly Wilsons in Epsom, where I went in a panic to pick up a circlip I needed for my gear selector before I went out to Spa. I asked on the spot if there was any chance they could put the car up on a ramp and fit it for me, which they happily obliged to do and didn't even charge me. All for a part that cost less than two quid.

Naturally though, it's the incredible Renaultsport driving experience that steals your heart. The older Clios are so uncompromising and provide buckets of feedback; I've never had so much fun throwing a car around a B-road or a track. They offer a decent punch of performance on a tight budget and they won't be such good value for long. I always keep an eye on the market, and honest unmolested cars are becoming increasingly hard to find. Compared to my Megane 250, a 182 offers you 90 per cent of the fun for 10 per cent of the price, with cheaper running costs too.

I was lucky enough to be part of the twin test between the outgoing Megane 275 Cup-S and the FK2 Civic Type R, and while the Civic is magnificent, the Megane just delivers the extra level of feedback and fun factor that even the current breed of hot hatch rivals can't deliver. It's hard to imagine that the new Mk4 Megane could be any better, but I'm looking forward to the opportunity of finding out.

As the old saying goes, however, all good things must come to an end. Though I've waved goodbye to the Megane misty eyed, I'm lucky that it has stayed locally with a friend, so it's not all that bad. If you've made it this far, you'll have gathered that my time with Renaultsports has been rather good. So while I'm taking a break for now, I'll be back. More on the Megane's replacement coming soon!

When are you PH folks going to be able to do a Civic type R FK8 vs Megane RS 280 review?

Apparently uk dealers get their megane demos later this month, i'm itching to get a drive .. i need to order a new car and its pretty much come down to the civic or new RS megane. You magazine types must be getting cars for UK tests soon surely?

I'm gutted for you Ben, but onwards and upwards eh? As you said, you achieved exactly what you set out to do and at least you've had a good dabble in the Renault Sport world. Don't worry, you'll come back. They always do wink

I'm certainly going to miss your articles. They're honestly some of the best i've ever read. It definitely inspires and motivates me to get into Renault Sport ownership, which is something i've always wanted to do but not quite managed.

Will you be testing the new MK4 Megane 280, i take it?

Well done Ben - it's been an excellent Renaultsport ride for me too. I went from a 172 track car to a Clio 200, Mégane 265 and then a Mégane R26 (around the same time as you). Today I am waving goodbye to my Impreza STI Widetrack and saying welcome back to a Civic Type R FD2 that I owned 2 years ago, but had to sell due to financial reasons. I contacted the guy I sold it to and convinced him to sell it back to me biggrin.

Can't wait to try the new Renaultsport Mégane too, but I fear it may have lost a bit of rawness. I hope to be proved wrong as it looks amazing in that volcanic orange colour.

I reckon you're probably right! Luckily it's only half an hour away, so I'm sure I can borrow the keys every now and again if I ask nicely...

Matt can probably provide a bit more info on that, but I'm sure it'll be on the cards when we get one in. Having driven the FK8 already, it's going to be very, very close.

Shucks, thanks Sam! They won't be gone completely, just a slightly different flavour. I've been pleasantly surprised by the amount of people that have contacted me to say they've bought a Clio after reading my articles. Quite something. Clearly hasn't worked on you just yet though.... tongue out

I hope so on the new Megane, I'm not sure when we're getting one it yet but will try and steal the keys when we do!

I can imagine. I think many people like yourself, me included, once had the mindset of Renault's being unreliable heaps of junk. It's good to see that stereotype being put to bed, as i still think there are a few out there that like the brand and range but still continue with the old, tired stigma.

I look forward to any further updates from yourself regardless, Renault Sport or otherwise. What have you got your sights on next then?

Yep, I'm one of them. Still running my 172 Cup as a daily 3 years after being tipped over the edge to pull the trigger by you! My brother also had a lovely R26 and both of us aspire to jump up to either a mk3 or mk4 Megane next.

I feel really lucky to have enjoyed 30k care free miles in a focused performance car, at a time in my life when young kids, nursery fees and mortgages could well have forced a lengthy hiatus.

I was lucky enough to grab a passenger ride in an R26 230 around the Nordschleife a couple of years back. The driver knew his car and the circuit well and it was utterly fantastic.

Superb cars, I love their ability to embarrass better known and more costly rivals.

I always look out for Renaultsports in the mirrors of my GT3. biggrin

Some will just never shake it off sadly I doubt. 'My' recent 208 GTI being another one.

I've got a feeling you may have seen it already – but a rather iconic Japanese rally hero with gold wheels...

Fantastic! Glad to hear it's still going strong for you. I have to say I felt my 172 Cup was faster than my Trophy, but that may have been a placebo affect of it being stripped out and noisier. They just feel so over-engined for the size/weight of the car; there's nothing else I'd consider for a £1-2K budget with the practicality they offer too.

I can guarantee that neither of you would be disappointed by a Mk3 Megane; it'll feel just like your Clio but bigger and faster. And newer. And more comfortable. But otherwise, very similar biggrin

It's a shame, as they're missing out on some great cars in the process. It's their loss though, i suppose.

Ah yes, i was meaning to ask about that one. I did assume that it would mean the Megane would be going in place of it. Hope it serves you well Ben. That's another car i wouldn't mind ticking off the list one day!

Me included .... until I bought an F1 Team 230 many years ago, I can remember the drive home like it was yesterday and was utterly blown away by the car. Yes there were a few minor electrical gremlins with this early one but mechanically it felt absolutely bomb proof. I then moved on to a 265 and then a 275 Trophy both of which were utterly reliable and actually quite well built.

I'm also 'moving on' but with a loyalty to Renaultsport that will never fade.

Absolutely loved my MK3 250 Cup.

Unfortunately someone t-boned me on a roundabout and after being repaired it was ok, but then started leaving water in and I decided it was time to switch.

Replaced it with a 220 Trophy, which is a great car in it's own right, but I miss having a manual, and I missed the refinement of the Megane.

So solution: Megane 280 Cup on order. Hoping for delivery in August.

I had a Trophy back in 2005-2007. It’s still my favourite car. The Clio Trophy forum was full of great guys back then who all loved their cars. I now have a 172 Cup and even though I prefer the colour and the pared back simplicity of it (I like the 80kg lower weight too but can’t say it makes a noticeable difference), it doesn’t corner in quite the same tenacious way that the Trophy did. It’s a massive cliche but I did actually used to go back and do roundabouts again because it was such a giggle. It was just made for fast road driving, wasn’t even that great on track days as it has no LSD and was really skittish when hard on the brakes, but for hooning about on country roads it was sublime. I drove it from Snowdonia to Gower once on deserted roads through through mid-Wales, including the EVO triangle, and it was the most memorable drive of my life. As soon as I arrived after four hours of driving I just wanted to go back again.

Mine was No. 298/500, nicknamed XOG as that was the reg, and was bought by a French chap who took it home to Paris. It was promptly crashed into by a tt in a Z4 who tried to leave the scene of the accident. The owner was unhurt but XOG was written off. When I found out I felt the sort of pain normally reserved for when a favourite pet dies. Just a silly little red Clio with fancy dampers but I actually loved that car...

Great work! Look forward to hearing what you think once you've got it. Saw my first on the road a couple of weeks ago – certainly sticks out in the Tonic Orange. Looked mega!

Stick a Pure Motorsport top mount and strut brace kit on it. One of the best mods I've ever done on my Clios and certainly sharpens up the turn in and cornering ability driving
