Porsche Cayman T on the way?

718 follows 991 in offering lighter, leaner, more focused variant as end of production nears

As the world continues to wait for an official reveal of the new Cayman GT4 and Boxster Spyder, so news has emerged of another 718 with less weight and a tad more power - the Cayman T.

Yes, you've got it, just like the 911 Carrera T. In fact, it appears that the transformation from Cayman S to T will follow exactly the same rule book as the 991, if the information obtained by Auto Express is anything to go by. Small reduction in weight? Of course. Cherry picked best bits from the options list? Yep. And fabric door pulls, to be less useful than handles but make you feel like a racing driver? Goes without saying.

As for actual numbers, 360hp has been suggested for the T, putting it just ahead of the 350hp S but still keeping the 365hp GTS as top dog. The 911 Carrera T kept the same 370hp as a regular Carrera - thanks to PHer diffstar for pointing that out... Weight is expected to drop by 20kg (a manual S is 1,375kg without driver) through the same methods as the Carrera T - thinner glass, lighter seats and the removal of the PCM infotainment. Expect the latter to be a no-cost-option immediately added back in, and thus a big chunk of the expected weight loss with it.

As for the options, expect stuff like Sport Chrono, new wheels and a sports exhaust. While the 911 T was offered with both manual and PDK gearboxes, it's unknown yet whether the Cayman equivalent will follow that trend - could it potentially be manual only? Reports thus far are suggesting the Cayman T will arrive in 2019, ahead of this generation being replaced in 2020. Makes sense, given the Carrera T made its debut in 2017 and the 992-era 911 is now a matter of days away from being revealed. Should you want one, best start pestering your OPC now - more news to follow when it's released.

This article is full of errors, Who writes this stuff?

Carrera T didn't have a power increase of base Carrera
718 GTS is not 375HP
911T was not manual only

2/10 please try harder!

the marketing for the T versions makes me laugh.

A 20kg weight saving does not really do enough to call this a "light weight" version does it!

make sure you visit the bog before you drive or you'll ruin much of the light weight handling of this car

Apologies, half asleep. Obviously I meant 365hp, honest, will sort now. Other stuff wasn't sure about, so thanks!

Talk about slicing the salami.

Is this the equivalent in the range of the 987 R?

is the 911 T not the cheapest model in the range this suggests the 718 T would be mid range model

I do not see why they didn't resurrect the Club Sport spec used on the 928, 911 and 968 in the late 80's.
To me T represents touring not light weight.....and as for using R on the Cayman...should have been Club Sport IMHO...what next GT3 Macan....

Wasn't sure about, but wrote anyway on a published article? Wow. You must really take pride.

I would have thought the T would be based on the standard Cayman, not the S, like the Carrera T is ..

Another 5v mins another new limited edition (ish) Porsche model. Looks like they are adopting the Lotus marketing policy!

I assume they'll also lower the final (gearbox) ratio on the 718T like they did on the 911T. Something that they should have done on a 981 version..

I knew someone who used to do hill climbs in a very stripped out Elise who would always have a dump before each run for power to weight purposes.

I used to trim my fingernails before weight watchers weigh-ins for the same reason... it all helps.

Crikey, mate. I've heard of honesty being the best policy and all but jeez. I don't want to stick the boot in, but even I could have found that stuff via the Porsche site and spec sheets in about 10 minutes.
"I don't want to stick the boot in", says the posted named "Humansteamroller" and then does just that! Oh the irony!

..jeesh chill guys - anyone can make a mistake !!!

Anyway..talking of 1375KG.... the new Alpine A110 makes this seem a very heavy car. Makes a lot of its rivals seem heavy. Rather than endless power increases, it would be nice if Porsche and others could now do a concerted weight loss drive...and make their 4 cylinder engine sound a bit nicer......

Makes sense! I assumed wrongly then that the 911T used (a) specific cog(s).

Lol, taking a dump. Plenty of idiots destroying longevity of their components of even weakening structural integrity by applying 'Drillium' too liberally. Fortunately a phenomenon that's more widespread in the cycling world than it is among car enthusiasts.

it'll be interesting to see how they get rid of the weight as there's already no rear seats. the 911 t was only 5kg lighter if you didn't opt for no seats and pcm.

Yep....I've been thinking this for the past year. Has anybody seen a testing mule of a replacement? I only seem to see 718 GT4 mules?
