Aston Martin 'Project 003' teased

Wondering what Aston's forthcoming mid-engine supercar will look like? Here's a hint...

It must surely be taken as positive news that the development of Aston Martin’s portfolio can be difficult to keep track of nowadays. DB11 was followed by Vantage and then DBS in quick succession, with those respective ranges also expanding at pace and the limited run cars progressing swiftly too.

But now Aston has chosen to bring attention back to another of its ventures: the Project 003, first confirmed last year as a mid-engined hypercar to sit above the next Vanquish and below the Valkyrie in its growing range.

There’s nothing new today on exactly what the car will be - see here for the full story from last year - instead a better look on what the 003 will look like. From this picture we can see 600LT-style high exhaust pipes and a rear view with a hint of AMG One to it - long, slender lights, prominent haunches and, while it can’t be seen at the moment, you’d have to assume a chunky rear diffuser down there as well. Certainly, there’s no danger of it looking like any other Astons…

That’s your lot for now then, with plenty more to follow as 2021 nears. Like what you see thus far? We’re eagerly anticipating the next instalment…

To be unveiled at Geneva perhaps. There's some new things that haven't been on an Aston before. No doubt it'll upset some purists and traditionalists, but it's set to be a monster car, aimed at the likes of the Senna (but somewhat more aesthetically pleasing).

Looks pretty tasty. Aston Matrin, you seem to be very much on the ball with. Add a bit more design restraint to the DB models, especially on the interiors and be in top form Aston.

I thought more 488/720s territory?

Nope

That is the production car that will follow. This is a P1/918/Senna type car, so more a hypercar as we know them today, rather than Valkyrie which is far more extreme again

Using a Mercedes lump?

I don’t get the modern Aston’s, seems like they’ve sold out a bit using Mercedes running gear and interiors.

Much preferred the cars as they were with their own engines / interiors.

Mercedes running gear?! They use one Merc engine (the V8) and infotainment! I'd hardly call that selling out.....

TBC.

Given this car is talked about as "Son-of-Valkyrie", one logical route would be to offset the massive development costs of Valkryie's bespoke n/a V12 Cosworth unit by using an application of it in 003.

And given (a) the price-point and (b) the fact the interior architecture will not resemble anything from MB, one can assume it will have an Aston interior too.

Given that should help allay your above fears, I assume you'll be putting a deposit down? wink

Wait for the announcement I guess. As a general thing, the 4.0 V8 that's shared with AMG will be retired when the turbocharged straight 6 hybrid being developed in-house (based upon the AM31, an Aston developed V12) arrives.

It made sense to use the base of the AMG V8 at a time when they had to bring the Vantage up to date in terms of engine performance and infotainment. These are two areas where the old car was behind the competition, no matter how nice they looked or sounded.

If the company continues as it is, there'll be enough money in the kitty to develop more stuff in-house. As you'll hopefully see when the 003 is unveiled, it's not a Mercedes parts bin job that you might think it is.

True.

When I was a kid anything that'd do 170+ was a "supercar"
Now most of the 4 seat German M/AMG/RS will allegedly do 200+ with a limiter removed.
Where will it all end?

How do we define the Valkyrie tier of cars?
Super-hyper-ultra-megacars?

is mega more or less than ultra?

Fast = Sports car
Very Fast = Supercar
Super very fast = Hypercar
Over 1HP/KG = Megacar

Simple.

As is so often the case, nobody bothered to leave any creativity for the naming of the car, so let's assume this is a series — will they have a potential problem with Jaguar (or James Bond) after Project 006?

They have used more of other people’s engines than their own. They bought Lagonda just for the engine. So the vast majority of pre DB4 was a Lagonda engine.

DB7 engine was mostly Jaguar

The Newer (last) V8 was also mostly Jaguar

The V12 was a lot of Ford.

The New Vantage is Mercedes.

So that leaves the DB4/5/6 the DBS and the V8s of the William Towns era as their own engines. Plus the newest V12 which borrows much of its design idea to the last V12

I thought a supercar was something you could buy. Whereas a Hypercar is something you are sold? The difference being you cannot buy one. You don’t choose it, the manufacturer chooses you and charges you a secret multimillion price for it?

Potentially going to be a VERY pretty car. Those deep diffuser arcs seem reminiscent of the Valkyrie:

I note that in this month's EVO the "next month page says that it will have Aston Martin's 488 rival.
