New Civic Type R testing at the Nurburgring

Looks like the Megane Trophy-R isn't the only hot hatch with a record in its sights...

Back when the current FK8 Civic Type R was shown to the world in March 2017, much was made of its frankly ludicrous 7:43.80 Nurburgring lap time. Sure, that was completed by an apparently production spec prototype vehicle, rather than one fresh off the line, but all subsequent drives proved what an incredibly capable machine it was. On road and circuit, the Civic Type R remains the best hot hatch you can buy.

However, that Nurburgring supremacy looks to be under threat from the latest Megane Trophy-R, spotted testing there just a couple of weeks ago. The last Trophy-R claimed the front-wheel drive lap record before the Civic and the Golf Clubsport S, and will surely have designs on doing the same again.

Not if Honda has anything to do with it. These pictures show a facelifted Type R on the fabled circuit, with the usual facelift fare fitted - new bumpers, grilles, lights - but also one or two more interesting additions. The first is the Phoenix Yellow paint (or Sunlight Yellow, as it's also known), a colour not yet seen on the FK8 and known as the Civic Jordan hue from the turn of the millennium. It's only seen on very special Hondas, basically, including the NSX-R Hero we featured recently.

The second is the fitment of 'Nurburgring' stickers on the rear spoiler, implying this might be a Civic Type R special edition dedicated to the circuit. Honda has some form in doing this previously, of course, with its Motegi test track forming the basis of a Prelude special edition. This looks to have more intent behind it, though, and suggest Honda is very keen on re-establishing its name as maker of the fastest front-wheel drive hot hatch out there.

Finally, it's worth noting the camo'd roof, suggesting there might be a carbon option introduced with the facelift. It's all looking very serious, which it would have to when now considering hatchbacks presumably capable of Nordschleife lap times in the 7:30s.

There's nothing more to report as yet, though the prospect of another Renault Sport versus Honda battle royale on the Nurburgring is one for enthusiasts everywhere to be excited about given the cars produced previously. How much quicker can hot hatches get?

as great as these are to drive, I doubt I could live with one with the fake vents and awful styling, the megane looks a much nicer design

Looks bloody brilliant in yellow. Really brings out the best of the bonkers styling. I’d take one of these over a Golf any day of the week. I know others will disagree though!

IIRC most are not fake at all.

I'm sure Honda made a song and dance about all the aero kit bring functional on the current one - you'd assume the same for the facelift.

Used to hate the styling, but it's growing on me. The newer front really improves improves things imo.

It seems to have a host of small functional vents and a handful of enormous blatantly fake ones. The huge blanked off pseudo-grills around the front fog-lights (although one side has a small hole for the horn) are something of an eye-sore as are their equivalents at the rear.

I think its biggest styling issue is the wheel arches though - the extensions on the front and rear look like they were designed for different cars - the fronts being smoothly integrated into the bonnet line and the rear being weirdly angular and awkwardly hacked back where they hit the rear door. The rest of the car, whilst it's not to my tastes, is at least relatively consistent and cohesive in its approach but the rear wheel arches are just awful.

I am one of the Golf R owners and would never buy an FK8. However its brilliant that they make this bonkers piece of kit! We should all applaud them for doing so and giving us the choice

Maybe they should try setting a ring time with a proper car before doing ring based special editions...

The Phoenix yellow looks superb. That is the colour this car has been waiting for.

Facelift will hopefully tidy up some of the slightly rougher edges the car currently has, CF roof will be cool too. I may be able to buy one in 15 years hehe

With 300bhp+ you really need AWD to make these cars livable throughout the year in the UK.

False. My car has 357bhp, FWD and no diff and is perfectly liveable throughout the year, you just need to use a bit less throttle.

i've lost track of these now - seems to be a new one every other year, each with a more bonkers bodykit.

I think they should make the R softer and easier to live with (along with a more subtle appearance) and then do an 'RR' or something that has all the wings and spine shattering ride.

I owned an EP3 type R and had the FN2 shape Type-S - both were great cars but not for the commute which is where 90% of the 'buyer pool' spend their lives.

Aren’t those carried straight over from the pensioner-spec version? They’re still “fake”, but it’s not like they’re some sort of go-faster bit that Honda tacked on just for the CTR.

An even more bonkers version of an already bonkers car has got to be good. I'm not a huge fan of the styling, but do love that Honda have just gone mad with it. Makes a change from the super-conservative options that you can barely tell apart from their diesel stablemates.

Couldn't you say that about most cars? It doesn't make them "unlivable", you just have to drive to the conditions. A 1.0-litre Micra will wheel spin in snow and ice, as would an M3 or Ferrari 488.

In fairness, Honda aren't the only ones guilt of fake vents, but it is a bit silly.

Oh, I don't have any problems in wet conditions.
