Mercedes CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake: Spotted

AMG's forgotten fast estate looks more enticing than ever, particularly with a third off the asking price...

Remember the Mercedes CLS Shooting Brake? A lovely car, be in no doubt, yet one seemingly beset by conflicts - even by the standards of Mercedes' insatiable niche busting. The CLS was a more stylish, four-door coupe version of the E-Class (boiling things down to basics). Inherently therefore it was less commodious than the base vehicle, a point that continued to the Shooting Brake. Which, really, should be the practical version. And while it was more usable than the coupe, those after a hardy, durable E-Class based wagon could buy... an E-Class wagon. Up to and including an AMG version. The typically tough life an estate can lead, even the expensive ones, surely didn't sit all that well with the exquisite materials of the CLS. The estate body, handsome though it was, did perhaps dilute the CLS coupe message a tad.

It seems unlikely that something like the first (and only) CLS AMG Shooting Brake will happen again, unless Mercedes really wants to create a Panamera Sport Turismo Turbo rival by putting a wagon boot on the AMG GT 4-door. The E63 estate is better than it's ever been, after all, and it would appear the automotive niches left to fill are now solely of the SUV variety.

Thanks goodness, then, that Mercedes could once see the commercial sense in a near-600hp, rear-wheel drive sort-of coupe estate thing. Because just a few years later it's arguably looking more desirable than ever, such is the bizarre way in which car covetability tends to work. It's rarer than an RS6, more stylish than any E-Class, still wickedly fast and just about half the price of the aforementioned Panamera.

Don't think it's not up to being used and abused, either. Chris Harris ran a long-termer way back when, praising it for the speed, comfort, and ability to carry all manner of video equipment. While also returning better fuel economy, and feeling of higher quality, than an RS6. So there.

The CLS (and its E63 equivalent) of this era also now assume special significance as the last of the big, bad AMG wagons that were rear-wheel drive only. Again, it's another conflict, because four-wheel drive would make the performance even more explosive (as we're now seeing), but there remains something immensely naughty, and really rather cool, about so much power and two-wheel drive.

All things considered, then, this particular '63 Shooting Brake - the only petrol powered SB in the classifieds - has an awful lot to recommend it. As an 'S' car it benefits from the full 585hp, and was also treated to a host of other options that made it a £93,000 car new. Now, just 5,000 miles and little over 24 months later, it's for sale at £30k less than that. It happens with all cars of this ilk, yes, and there's no doubt the CLS will continue to depreciate, though that still represents a hefty chunk off the list price.

That it's being sold by a knowledgeable owner is another encouraging sign. Running two tonnes of Affalterbach V8 wagon is never going to be cheap, whether new, two years old or another decade down the line, so best be prepared - surely, though, here is where the experience is commensurate with the expense. So while £60k will most certainly buy a lovely RS6, or a very nearly new C63, don't forget about the CLS - odd idea it may have seemed, and will probably always remain, but what a car it turned out to be.

Have a huge soft spot for these, even if I am only lukewarm on some of the interior.

Didn't these come with a wood floor in the boot (as an option) or am I imagining something?

Yes they did, like a high end boat. Looked great but likely a rarely specced option.

Definitely over priced! Surely you could bag the new E63 Wagon for that price now.

a civilised way to burn two grand per month in ongoing depreciation

The car is overpriced. Pretty sure it’s the same car that was for sale last summer at same price Think it’s why it’s not sold. Needs to be closer to £50k me thinks Owned a diesel CLS touring and did 160000 miles in it. Loved the car, proved to be bullet proof

Yup - I think it was cherry wood and it cost about 3k.

As lovely as it might look, I'd be heartbroken the first time something gouged a big lump out of it. I'm thinking pedals of a child's bike, sharp edges to metal flight cases etc.

Hugely overpriced - sorry vendor but that's a £45k car!
Lovely car though - I've got a diesel CLS shooting brake and it does everything I need it to.

A very nice car that, although I still don't think Mercedes captured the looks of the W219 CLS with the later models sadly.

I think this CLS63 or an E63 estate and I'd choose the E. Not as pretty but I think it looks more purposeful.

In another couple of years this things price will start with a "2", given by the value of some earlier ones around. Will take a brave buyer.

Really nice car but this is £40k more than the majority of the others on sale!

Forty thousand pounds...

Yes of course it's the AMG 63 model but the big 350 diesels are probably better suited to day to day duties anyway.

As said already this is a £45k-£50k car at best.

One of those cars where people with plenty of cash buy them new and just take the hit, then there is a massive gulf down to where anyone else, on a tighter budget is brave enough to buy one, they need to be fairly cheap as though they are desirable, 63 grand opens up a massive amount of very tasty stuff.

Not that this isnt fantastic, but at the end of the day its a slightly oddball choice and doesnt tend to be something with a massive market, well understood pricing structure and reassuring ongoing residuals, say like a 911 or something.

Big AMG Mercs seem to hang around in the classifieds.

I had one, lovely car if not, in truth, as practical as an E-class estate, however, I saw one the other day and wondered whether the rear 3/4 view still looked as good as I thought originally.

They did offer the wooden loadbay area but I thought there was too much of a risk of it being scratched/damaged, although it looked good. I only ever saw pictures of it but it looked to have been slightly better executed than the 'wooden' sides on the MK1 Cortinas wink

A friend had a Jaguar XFR-S Sportbrake, or whatever it was called, at about the same time but I preferred the CLS, as I thought it looked better, had a (much) better interior and sounded better. The Jaguar is probably a much rarer car though.

If I remember correctly, these were massively discounted when new (probably pre-regd.) by MBUK.

It's worth £45K tops today.

Exactly my thinking. As I was reading the article I was expecting this to be up for 40s.

Awesome motor, mind.
