Dodge
has just announced the specification of its 2002 Dodge Intrepid police car
package.
In a corny statement only worthy of a top PR man, Jim Julow, Vice President,
Dodge Global Brand Center announced "Dodge is all about breaking the
rules, but if you're caught breaking the rules on the road, don't be
surprised if you get pulled over by a new 2002 Dodge Intrepid police car."
Available to police departments only, the police vehicle package is based on
the 2002 Dodge Intrepid R/T - the Dodge brand's modern-day muscle car
interpretation - which features a 3.5-litre SOHC V-6 engine that delivers 242
horsepower at 6400 rpm and 248 lb.-ft. of torque at 3950 rpm. The Dodge Intrepid
police package features a high-performance suspension, heavy-duty four-wheel
disc anti-lock brakes, purpose-built lighting, and severe-duty powertrain
cooling system.
The former Chrysler Corporation dominated the police car business throughout
the 1960s, 70s and early 80s with market shares ranging from 45-60 percent.
Police vehicles manufactured by Chrysler Corp. included the glamourously named
Dodge Royal Monaco, the more dainty sounding Dodge Coronet as well as the Dodge
Aires, Dodge Diplomat, Dodge Dart, the hliariously titled Dodge St. Regis, the
Plymouth Gran Fury, Plymouth Volare, Plymouth Reliant, and Chrysler Newport.
Future cars are rumoured to include the Plymouth Sound and Dodge Bognor Regis.
Chrysler-manufactured police cars were also popular in Hollywood. The
television show Car 54 featured a Desoto police car, Adam 12 featured the
Plymouth Satellite and AMC Matador police vehicles while the Blues Brothers
movie featured Dodge Monaco police vehicles.
Base price for the Dodge Intrepid police vehicle, which is available only to
county, city and state police departments is only $23,800.
