997 GT3 RS 4.0: Market Watch

The last of the Mezger-engined manuals and a sure-fire future classic 911

If you can find one of the 29 British cars, a 4.0-litre RS is now worth around £200,000. This is a slight drop from the c.£250,000 they commanded brand new, but still a big jump over the £128,000 list price.

4.0-litre engine a fine swansong for the GT3

Many cars will have found their way to collections now, unlikely to emerge for many years. A GT3 RS 4.0 is a guaranteed investment thanks to its rarity and provenance.

Buy if: Nothing but the ultimate GT3 will do, with its guaranteed future value a bonus.
Don't buy if: There are any kind of budget constraints.
We found: Again, we were out of luck. Should a 4.0 RS come up for sale, it's likely to be in the region of £200,000.

Price Guide -
Ex-Harris owned or not, all 4.0 RS GT3s should be immaculate and command a similar price.

Not quite. They cost £140K(ish) - changed hands at £250K initially due to restricted supply and demand, now back at £200K - still a £60K profit.

I've seen plenty being driven at the 'Ring as intended.

It's the only car that has got past my Turbo on a spirited lap, and he was running semi-slicks! biggrin

There was one at Precious Metals that hung around for months at 175k, 1400 miles on the clock. Or do they mean 200k for an unused car?

what of load of tripe - last OPC listed car one went for circa £170k, and others have sold for less and some a lot more apparantly. goodness knows what one would fetch today, probably whatever someone is willing to pay ! it's not a bloody commodity market, it's a car that begs to be driven. getting bored of these cars as investments articles.

Is that the one that's currently up for sale on car and classic?

Aye. Was at Hexagon Classics, then Ferrari Birmingham then Precious Metals on SOR. Initial asking price at 190k at all three, then reduced to 175k, then sold after a few months after that.
The Car and classic ad is out of date.

Are they really worth 175-200?? The 4.0 is only 2 years old, old-tech and already blitzed by the all-new GT3. Limited numbers alone (600) surely can't explain the 50k+ premium, can it? They only built 682 996 RS's and after 10 years they aren't quite list price yet. Very special car, but overpriced imo

The problem with this sort of car is that once the initial few are sold by owners not looking to keep them long term, supply is extremely limited. UK cars will tend to command a premium and I am not sure how many are still here as I know of 3 that have been exported. I am actually surprised considering the economic environment over the last few years that cars have not openly sold under £170K and personally believe this may indicated a good chance that £200K for an unused car may not be unrealistic. Like everything they are worth what someone will pay and what an owner is willing to take.
I could as an owner be accused of ramping the market, but intend to keep and lightly use mine and don't know anyone actively looking to sell. What I can say is I absolutely love mine now after initially preferring my 996, they share similarities but are surprisingly different. What both have to me is an almost perfect balance of chassis grip and power, to me this is part of why they work so well.
How the new GT3 will affect value only time will tell, but the 4.0 is a hell of a car, a fitting farewell to an engine that has true pedigree. Let's hope Porsche keep making cars like the GT3RS, none of them have been bad!

250k never happened.

people can put them up at 200k but you would be lucky to get that imo.

Good post, indeed the 'basic 991 GT3' can already show this car a clean pair of heels, so it's not that special imo..

If I'd paid over the odds for one of these, I'd be sweating right now..weeping

Does that mean a Nissan GTR is worth more than a 250 GTO?

There are a few advertised on mobile.de at around £160k with less than 6k miles.

but if people will pay 230k as above why sell at 160k ?

the issue is the cars owned by these people are sat not used, it's a sad state to own an iconic drivers car and not use it.
