It's old news, but a story we missed: a man from London challenged the
decision not to prosecute former Home Secretary Jack Straw's driver for
speeding. In a high profile incident last July, Straw's unmarked Omega was
stopped for speeding in Somerset. Despite travelling at way above the 70mph
limit, the driver wasn't prosecuted because it was claimed that he was reacting
to a potential threat to Straw's safety.
Londoner Wilson George is asked for High Court permission to challenge that
decision on grounds that it was not in the public interest. He said that the
Crown Prosecution Service and the police misapplied and misinterpreted the law.
Permission for the appeal was denied, with Lord Justice Laws commenting that
his application was "wholly misconceived and should never have been
brought".
